Bragging about my little Edith I hear so many stories about the trials of housetraining, and believe me, Edie was no different. It is a tough struggle with small dogs. Edie is 5 now, and I need to brag about something that happened this summer. We have a doggie door that goes out to our backyard. Edie got up out of our bed in the middle of the night, (about 3 a.m.) went down her ramp (yes, our bed is high, so she has a carpeted ramp to get up and down), down the stairs, through the kitchen, and out to the backyard. She went pee pee (I was spying from upstairs by this time), came back inside, up the stairs, up her ramp, and into bed. All without making a sound. :animal36 Well, I was just so proud that I called a dozen people the next day to brag. To those of you having trouble with housetraining, I can tell you that the single thing that solved all our problems was the doggie door. Edie KNEW what she had to do, but she was unable to get outside in time!!. I highly recommend doggie doors. We have one with a magnetic lock. Only an animal wearing a magnetic "key" can get in, so no troubles with squirrels, etc. Alison, the proud mother. |
To Edie ...You go Girl !!! :) :) :) :) What a good girl ! To mom - that was so cute and congratulations - you gonna throw a Pee Party ? I would !! I Bet you were laying in bed afterward just smiling your head off :) ps...I love spying on my girls too - I think it must run in the blood.... |
I agree!! Ours opens into a fenced yard, so they can come and go as they please. Sometimes they just like to sit out on the stoop in the sun. They are not terribly expensive, and even my husband who is FAR from handy was able to install it. Well worth it! |
Yes, Sherry Lynn--I should have said that our back yard is fenced. Naturally I would not allow Edie out without a fence. That's key. |
Yep, the doggie door did the trick for us too in the potty training battle. Rowdy was doing OK, but still having a few accidents. Within a day of the doggie door - no more accidents - except for a wierd week about 2 months later - all of a sudden he decided to poop in the house. It started on a day it was raining. It lasted about a week and then stopped as suddenly as it started. I definitely would recommend a doggie door. However, I know some people don't have a fenced yard, in which case a doggie door obviously would not work. Others live in places that have hawks or coyotes, etc and again, it would not work. But for those of us who have fenced, locked, safe backyards, it is a godsend! I will say though, that I have to watch him like a hawk when we go to other places because he is not good about asking to go out - he really doesn't know how to ask. If there is a glass door, and he can see outside, he will go stand in front of the door, but he will not bark or anything to let me know he has to go. Other than vigilance at other places, the doggie door is the berries!!! :D Unfortunately, our doggie door is in our storm door and we have to have the solid door open for him to go out. We close and lock the solid door at night so, he can't go out in the middle of the night without waking me up - which he does most every night with sweet little puppy kisses!!! :p I really don't mind the kisses, it's the getting up that I don't much care for. |
If we didn't have hawks and coyotes around us  I would get a doggy door for Shelby. She is great at getting out of our bed and using her wee pad though. Can I brag too? |
