Moms who had super tiny puppies, Please help! We just brought home Ellie last weekend and its been quite difficult. She is 12 weeks but just under a pound. We were told she was more than that, which could have been true. We are having a hard time keeping her sugar up. Per the vets orders we are giving her Karo syrup twice a day. Do you have any tips on taking care of a really little baby? Our goal is to get her weight up so that she can hopefully be healthier. |
Congratulations on your new baby girl. I am the Mommy to Lolita, who holds steady at 3.8 pounds and is now 5 years old. We regularly give her Nutri-cal or Nutri-stat as a supplement and find that feeding her small meals throughtout the day help to regulate her sugar levels. She has had fits where we gets tummy rumbles, she acts uncomfortable and doesn't want to be touched...we know right away that it is her sugar dropping and that she needs either Nutri-cal or, as your vet suggested, karo. It can sometimes be daunting, but as you get to know your new little girl and her behaviors better, you will be able to anticipate these episodes and keep her healthy and happy. |

I second what LuvMyYorkies says above. I'd definitely get NutriCal, which is available at PetsMart, PetCo etcetera. You can use it more than twice a day if she is not staying level. Also, make sure you give her some before bedtime...also give her some kind of protein before bed too. Give her some nutrical right when she wakes up in the morning too, as her blood sugar will likely be low after not eating all night. Are there certain times of day when she is crashing? Is her appetite okay? Is she acting weird after eating or anything? |
Ethical breeders do not place puppies that small for the new owner to sort out the problems...I wish you the best. |

What are you feeding her? Maybe she isn't getting all the nutrients she needs? Or maybe she'd benefit from some extra supplements. My boy was tiny when I got him and we never had to give nutrical for more than the first week. (he was around the same size as yours) how much sleep is she getting, these little ones play hard and crash harder and puppies need tonnes of sleep. Even now, Harley who is barely 4lbs and almost 2 years old, sleeps all day (and prowls all evening). |
oh forgot to throw in congrats on your new baby! |
Congratulations on your new baby. I have two little ones, one is 2 and 1/2 Lbs and two years the other is 1 Lb 10 Oz and 21 weeks. I agree that nautical is the first step, but you also must make sure your little one gets a lot of rest and is kept warm. I keep food and water available at all times, you may want to measure the food so that you can be sure that she is eating. These little ones take very close looking after. You might want to get a playpen so that your baby has a small play area, that is safe from peoples feet and a collar with a bell for the times she is out. Don't let her wear herself out as they can do this quite easily. Short play times are best till they get bigger and can control their sugar levels, maybe 10 to 15 minutes, then food and rest. If I can help please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck. |
Congratulations. It is so important to make sure she is eating every 3-4 hours even overnight. I had to do this for my Cali as she would go hypoglycemic and was a very bad eater. You have to watch closely for any hint she is going into low sugar. Cali outgrew it. I hope Ellie can put on some weight and quickly grow out of it. |
Congrats on your new baby. I as well has a tiny. Sadie was almost 1 lb when I got her at 14 weeks. I thank goodness did not have any problems at all with her blood sugar dropping. I did have a big problem with the tummy rumbles. It would scare her to death. Not only was it load but it hurt her. The vet said it was her bowel moving. I always had nutrical on hand. she is 4 now and a little over 3 1/2 lbs. And as tuff as her 10 lb sister. Good luck |
Thanks for all the suggestions. Ellie lost a lot of weight dealing with the stress of moving to a new home, she also is a really picky eater (which I failed to ask the breeder when we picked up her) I picked up nutrical and I have been watching her like a hawk. She doesn't get much play time because her sister HATES her at the moment. Bri wants nothing to do with her. We wrap her up when she sleeps because she gets cold. She was on puppy chow at the breeders, and that is what she was on when she came home. She refused to eat. The vet suggested getting wet food for the time being. She eats the recommended amount of wet food 3 times a day and gets dry food any other time she's hungry. I've learned the warning signs and I have been able to handle her sugar before she has an attack! Thanks so much for the advice! She's already super feisty, so I cannot WAIT for her to get over this so she can play more! |
I have one that is 2.75 pounds 3 years old. She does great now. When I first got her I put karo syrup in her water. She had NO issues with hypoglycemia |
i find with our Keeper that i feed him every 3 hrs even through the night i give him some food i also use nutri cal once a day he is maintaining his weight he is just about 10 months and weights 2.2 to 2.4 |
You might try to resolve the cold issue by making a sleep sweater from a sock...cut off the toe and cut holes for the legs...won't fall off when she moves around either |
