Suckling! My baby does the cutest thing! She'll gather up a corner of one particular blanket until it's in the shape of a (for lack of a better word) tit, then she'll sit there and suck of it all night long! She normally does this only when she's snuggled up next to me, so I think she feels like I'm her "real mommy" and is trying to get milk! She uses her little forepaws to work the blanket back and forth, and makes the cutest little noises! The bf and I will just sit there and stare at her when she does this, because it's almost like she's in her own little trance. It really is the most adorable thing ever! :D |
Aww, that tend to be more of a "cat thing" to do lol. My female cat is 4 yrs. old and still does that on one specific blanket LOL. Just curious, how old is she? |
Really? I've never heard of cats doing this! Or any dogs for that matter, lol! I really do wonder about what she's thinking when she does it, tho, because she's so into it! I thought maybe it was because she was taken away from her real mommy at too young an age (6 weeks, couldn't be helped), and so she really thinks of me as her mommy! I like that idea, anyway :D She'll be a year on June 9th. So she's still a puppy to me... My baby... But not really a baby anymore :) |
Was your kitty taken from her mom at a very young age as well? I can just picture a cat doing this... So sweet :) |

My cairn does this all the time also. And she is five. It is so cute but I worry it was because she was taken from Her mom to early. Yes I bought her at s pet shop. Never ever again. She is a great dog I just worry how her parents are being taken care of. :( |
We had a cat who did this, also sucked on our fingers- the vet said she was most likely taken from her mother too young (we got her from the humane society so we didn't really know) She did eventually grow out of it (she is 19 now and hasn't done it in many years!) |
Awww... I know it's silly, but it makes me feel like our bond is even stronger than I thought... That I really am her real mommy and I'm so privileged that she thinks so, too. I can't help it... I'm so sentimental, lol! Do you feel this way when your's does this, or am I just a sappy crazy lady?! :) |

Alomst every cat I've ever had did at least the "kneeding" part and my mom's cat too still "suckles" on this one particular blanket and he's a yr. old. I've read that it releases "feel good" endorphins (sp?) and that's why they seem to get in that "trance" like state when they do it (well, that's what I read about cats anyway) I've never seen a dog do it though, I'm sure it does have something to do with having to leave mom so early. Very cute though:) |

I use to have a friend who had a dog who did this its whole life, and it lived till around 14 yrs old or so. I think it was a basset hound. They also said it was because it was taken away from its mother too young. |
I've never had a dog do that, but my daughter and I rescued a pair of kittens who lost their mom in September. They were about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks old when we took them in. They both still suckle on blankets - too cute :) - especially when my daughter is home since she did most of their feedings and they bonded very strongly to her. |

That is so sweet. It's probaby very comforting like a skin baby using a pacifier. |
My Bella does this also, I didn't get her till she was 11 wks old. So I am curious if the human Mom & Dad weened them too early? Bella only does this when she is trying to go to sleep though. Most like a pacifier for soothing. It is kinda cute, but I don't want her to chew a whole in what she is pacifying on. |

Lol, she's TRIED to do it to me before (she used to like to burrow up under my tee-shirt when we slept) but I put a stop to that! Now she sleeps in between my knees, or nestled against my tummy, only, and she has her blankie to suckle! |
My Layla does this too! But she uses cushions and pillows. When she was a baby she'd knead with her paws, but that has stopped now. She'll just stuff her face into the pillow and start sucking  I've noticed she seems to do it to calm down. When she gets really excited, she'll run around for a bit and then look for a pillow! She also likes to do it after eating meals... she'll come straight over to me if I'm on the couch and I'll lift her up and she'll start sucking on a throw cushion :) I think it's just the cutest thing! She does it before bedtime too, if I let her on the bed while I'm reading. She snuggles up beside me and sucks on the corner of my pillow. |
Our first dog as a married couple (Jack, an American Eskimo) did that every night...except he actually CHEWED the gathered-up spot off every night. Our blanket would end up looking like swiss cheese! We'd get a new blanket...and again! We finally succeeded in getting him trained to stop (which was almost sad!) |
Thanks! This thread has finally put a name on some of my pup's behavior-kneading. We are not cat people & would have never figured this out. We'd just call it "pedaling her feet" but she'll do this when she is really, really tired. 99% of the time she has a toy in her mouth, she'll start the "kneading" & her eyes will keep closing, sometimes she'll actually fall asleep! It's way too cute, I just thought it was to further display her addiction to playing fetch.:p She was given to me at 9.5 weeks old, so maybe that has something to do with it. Whatever the cause, I love it because she is so cuddly & lovey-dovey when she gets like this! |
LOL, My Skeeter is three years old and still likes to hold on to my finger to go to sleep. He used to suck on it when we first got him at 12 weeks old. He climbs up into my lap, rolls over on his back so I can hold him like a baby and latches on! The breeder told me he would fall asleep latched on to his mama too. |

I had a friend that had a little Boston Terrier and she sucked on her blanket. I think she was about 12 or 13 when they had to put her down, but even up until then, she sucked on her blankie. |
A friend of mine has a 4-5 year old female cat that goes nuts when she wears her fuzzy robe. The cat will grab some of the fur with her mouth and start kneading it just like kittens do when they are nursing. You can hear her purr from across the room! LOL. |
