housebreaking At what age do most yorkies seem to become housebroken? My yorkie is now 11 weeks old and we have good days and bad days. Am I trying to break her too soon?Is she still too young? |
Hi. Yes, she is still very young to be potty trained. Most breeders will not place a yorkie w its new home until 12 wks. These dogs are a bit challenging in the potty training dept. I think some of the breeders on this site say it can take up to 6 months. I used a play pen type device and pee pad trained. That worked well for me but took time. Don't get discouraged. Your little one is just going to take time and patience and eventually it will work. |
Depends on the owner- they will not just become housebroken- they require a lot of work and diligence- the harder the owner works, the faster they become housebroken. But yes, 11 weeks is way too early to expect it. |
Zoe is 8 months and is still not what I would call completely potty trained. She has pee accidents and usually refuses to poop on her pads. Sometimes I feel outwitted by her! |
Princess is still a work in progress at 16 months...we were almost at perfection then had a setback and are back at square one. Each one is different, as is each set of circumstances. Just try to be patient & consistent...they want to please us & will do it as soon as they're capable, I'm sure. |
Bentley is 5 months old, and we are still a work in progress. We have are good days and are bad days. He really does have a mind of his own!! |
I really think it is how much time you have to spend on it. If you are home lots they can catch on pretty fast. I have had great luck with mine. Never thought they where hard at all but I spend pretty much 24/7 with them when potty training. Lexi I drove truck with my dh and that made it really easy. Dh was very good about pulling over and if not she would use a pad. She now goes outside. And lily was one of her pups and i am now home I started her young and she caught on fast also. Just be consistent. And reward when they go. Eleven weeks is young but if you take them out enough and don't give them a chance to make a mistake in the house I think you will be surprised how well it will go. I think the ex pens are a great idea while you are at work. Gives them room to have there beds and a little room. And of course a pee pad on one end. Sorry got long winded but I do believe if you put the time into them they are not that hard to break. |

I agree - I think that really helps speed it along. |
Good luck!!!! I'm also having trouble housebreaking mine its driving me mad hehehe |
I think Rosie was about 9 months old when you had her potty trained as far as peeing. As far as the other, she is almost 4 years old and will occasionally have an accident in the house. Everytime she would potty outside I would sing praises and give her a treat. I really felt potty training went pretty easy. Good luck! |
yeah precious acts like she cant hold it but of course my vet says differently. but u couldnt pay princess in doggie treats to use indoors lol. they are like kids and they are all different thank GOD we will keep working on it |
Basil is 6 months, and is almost there, about 96%. Basil will go outside and go, not in his pen. Caper is the same age, and will go in another Pee Pad Lined Pen, but does not want to go outside. He is about 60% there, but we have only had him a little over 3 weeks. Carlo, an 11 year old Cane Corso was housetrained as a Pup in 4 days and has had only about 3 accidents in that time, and all after he came down with Cancer. Maxine, a 14 year old Yorkie still has accidents if we miss her signals, or if she is mad at us. Take her out, she will not go. Bring her in, she goes on a rug 1 minute later and smiles. |

:eyetearss Rosie pees on my bedroom rug when she is mad. Nice to know I am not the only one who has a yorkie with an attitude. Hmmmmm, can't figure out where she gets that from! :p |
