At first he was treating me like a nut case

(guys I've posted before this has been going on pretty much since we brought Rock Star home with us - so about 6 months of my husband telling me I'm either a hypochondriac, or that my brain tumor has suddenly developed alleged *psychological characteristics* ie: schizoaffective like behavior in terms of *paranoia* - WHICH IS ENOUGH TO WANT TO RIP YOUR OWN HAIR OUT!!! ....ok...calm down...ending rant...)

And after the first 5-10 vet visits and thousands of dollars spent with NO GOOD to show for it (a problem that seems prevalent in health care amongst ALL species these days?!) and initially being told I was experiencing 'sympathy itching' - which is effing ridiculous this isn't pregnancy but I'll try and keep on topic... errr it's just so much!!!

I thought he had fleas the day e got him - did multiple types of vet-prescribed and ordered rinses, dips, baths, and wipes. Had the baby scraped and no worms nor mange were found and still no fleas they had us at that point add the derma-x or whatever shampoo and the malacet or however you spell it yeast wipes plus revolution for mange plus ear drops for yeast, plus a 3x daily dose of a prednisone. My both get these areas that look like swollen ANT COLLONIES - about the size of a blueberry on me that can grow to be wider or flatter and as big as a ping-pong ball and where hair follicles are there appear to be black, thick 'hairs' - but when you try to pull it out 'say off of your eyebrow' - before you can blink it seems either another magically produced at that very moment on the bridge of your nose - OR that these things hop like crazy evil microbes :***( I don't know but personally my eyebrows all the hair fell out - I've used dog treatments for lice, scabies, fleas, mites, etc - as well as every super chemical product from asia to the USA and then went hollistic using ayurvedic oils - hemp, neem, tea-tree oil, oatmeal, aloe, argan oil, coconut and sesame oil as well. OH and who could forget the garlic and ginger?!

Right now he has next to his nose a "colony' thing and about 6 large swollen hair follicles where his whiskers are. He also has a black patch that little black dots come out of under his chin that he scratches at and cries as it goes from raw to covered in this weird skin that looks similar to a honey-comb like a bee-hive (same thing happens to my eyebrows and to the other places...)

ANY ideas???

Has he seen a board certified veterinary dermatologist yet?
That is his best chance at complete and fast recovery from whatever this is because your general vet obvious has no more suggestions.

This sounds horrible, have you seen a dermatologist? I think that's where I would go, maybe they can figure this out by finding what is up with you first. If the vets can't figure it out, I would give it a try. What do you have to lose?

A fungus?

Look at this:

Leather ear, slick ear, English ear, black ear does affect some toy dogs, namely Yorkies, rather seriously. It can be responsible for hair loss on the ears, hocks, and the end of the tail and leaves a slimy black substance in those places. Some people think it is a fungus and some think it is a "rabbit mite". Frankly, having spent hundreds of dollars in the 70's to cure it, I still can't tell you what it is but I can tell you how to keep from getting it or how to get rid of it once you've "got it".

At the first sign of black around the edges of the ear, wipe the ear with "dog-o-dontic pads" dipped in alcohol. Bathe in Betadine or Plexadine Shampoo, paying particular attention to the ears, end of tail, and hocks. Use Ear Guard by Gerard Pellham regularly in the ears and cover the ears, hocks, and end of tail with a thin coating of Lotrimin 1%....no other kind of Lotrimin...just Lotrimin 1%, every day until the problem is solved! You will notice the ear begin to get very dry. Stop using the Lotrimin 1% if the ears get too dry! Another product which I have recently used for this problem is #l All Systems Tea Tree Oil and I'm happy to say that it works! This stuff is also really good to spray on "wrappers" as it is not too tasty!
Softer coated dogs never seem to have a problem with this but the silky coated dog with a lower skin temperature seems to have a problem when colder weather and high humidity prevail. Keep the dogs warmer and wash them at least once a week using Betadine or Iodine shampoo in those areas which are susceptible. You will be in control if you follow these instructions. It is also a good idea to have your veterinarian do a thyroid function test on dogs with these symptoms because some dogs with this problem also have a low thyroid function and medication may help the situation and keep the dog from becoming sterile and the bitch from having unusually small litters.

ok, maybe it's just me, but this sounds familiar, especially the "black hair" looking things sticking out of the problem areas. Read this post and tell us if it sounds like your same issue:

Idk, it just rung a bell with me since I followed the thread I posted above and kjc on here was really concerned that this person had a furnace problem and was concerned about carbon monoxide problems. It would only be that if you have oil heating in your home though.

Have you tried seeing a parasitologist?

I would try emailing Dr David Lindsay and send photos:

First of all, let me say that I am very sorry that you are having to deal with this. I too agree with the others to see a dermatologist. Wow, I cannot even imagine having to deal with something like this. Prayers and good wishes for you both. This has to be just horrible.

The above is an example of the type of program you need to get into - a local university medical school program where the professors of many specialties and subspecialties treat patients with more hard to diagnose and/or overlapping medical conditions. You can mention your dog's condition as part of your medical history. Usually your doctor needs to call for a referral but your local university program may not require it. These types of programs are good at getting together all of the resources necessary for the diagnosing and treatment of the type of symptoms you describe. I think grants and other types of helpful funding are sometimes available for help in payment if required and conditions met.

You also need to try to get your dog into a veterinary version of the same kind of thing at your local vet school, though they may have no payment help programs.
