Some Hair Questions... 1. Esme went to the groomers last week and I had them cut around her eyes because I was worried she couldn't see us. I do want to let her hair grow, was I supposed to let this hair around the eyes grow too??? I have been looking at pictures of grown up yorkies and I can't tell if its long or short in between the eyes. 2. Esme's hair is kind of thin around her face and head. Will she fill out as she gets older? The groomers said she is just a baby and I shouldn't worry about it... but my husband says we got a bald dog to match him (he thinks this is funny, I do not). 3. At what age do yorkies start changing their color? I am eager to see what color Esme will be... Thanks for all the info! |
Thats an interesting question. I have always let Bell's hair grow on her face except for a few strands near her eyes that gets a little nasty. I have looked at the pictures in the books that I have on yorkies and it looks like the hair is all long. It also looks like they take it up in the top knot starting at the end of the nose. Any body out there have any insight!! |
Hi Mari...I am also in Miami :D That is soo cool!! Mojo started changing colors at about 4 months (his head was grayish..hehehe) Now my boy is like a teddy bear, has a really full coat and up to today i have not seen a dog harrier than he is..;) Did you get to see Esme's parents? If you did, that gives you an idea of what she will look like as an adult (but keep in mind generations before her also will afect her appearance) When Mojo was about 6 months i took him to the groomer's and they also cut around his eyes...but if you want to keep Esme's in the full standard coat the one thing you should trim is the ears, paws, belly and the "hygienic trim". Good luck with you lil girl...and no, i don't think she will be bald like ur husband...hehehehe;D |

I did see Esme's parents. They both looked hairy at the time, but I really didn't pay them much attention because I was so busy checking Esme out! :D Mari |
I live by country walk (by coral reef high school)!! Maybe we should make a Miami meeting some time...donnou how many people from miami are here in the forum, but it sure would be fun:) |
Ironically, I woke up this morning and found that Archie's bangs were cut in the middle of the night! Turns out that my boyfriend cut his bangs using kitchen scissors because he thought that Archie's hair was bothering him too much. I posted a picture...Archie looks like a monkey when he's got bangs. You'll notice that there are other pics of him in the photo gallery where he doesn't look like a monkey. |

Owwwwwwwwwww...he doesn;t look like a monkey..he is cute! |
Esme's gray hair Archie is ADORABLE! His hair looks really cute!!! Actually, I was looking closely at Esme's head today (which was tough since she doesn't stay still for long), and her roots are starting to look grayish... which then makes her look like she is going bald because you see the gray through the dark hair and it looks like her scalp! So, I guess she IS starting to change colors.. she will be 4 months on Saturday... It would be awesome to have a miami yorkie get together! |
lickthestar....I don't see a monkey anywhere, I think he's adorable. Schatzie's bangs are long enough to hang over her eyes and just a tad short to get pulled up with the other hairs in her top knot bow. Any kind of hair gel works well and I also have a top knot bow gel that is used (human hair gel is much cheaper)... I think it's a waiting game for the hair to get long enough to do what you want. For instance the hair around the eyes, once long enough it will lay down on it's own. Schatzie's is just now getting to that point. I tell myself daily, "her hair will grow, her hair will grow"....so we wait., patiently at that!! :p |

Ow man...so we should do a yorkie meeting:):) It would be so much funnnnnnnnnn... |
My vet told me not to clip around the eyes as when they grow in, can cause eye infections. Just be patient and they will grow out! Same with the top hair. Mine is finally in a bow and stays! Yeepee! |

1 Attachment(s) Sami's (5 mo) hair is getting pretty long, and under his arms his hair is starting to get matted. I brush and comb him just about every day, but my question is what is the right age to have him clipped? I don't remember when I first started tilly's grooming, and her coat is silkie and really didn't require constant upkeep. Sami's coat is a cross between thick wooley/cotton? His hair around the eyes are long and you can barely see his little blackeyes if it wasn't for him having eyebrows & mustache :) you couldn't make out what end was what? but the hair (bangs) are not long enough to put a tie in it. I have tried and the hairs wont stay! I really dont want him to have his baby look taken away, I have had his ears shaved and nails trimed but just not certain if I should wait until he changes color? which I think he his done? his reddish eyebrows & mustash and on his legs & feet have all just about have turned blonde/ tan? and his body is still a dark blue and no signs of any root growth? But I am just not sure what to do? any suggestions? I attached a photo of my little rasta looking sami :) thanks :) |
1 Attachment(s) I've had groomers cut so much that it grew in all over again into Chanels eyes (when she was about a year old) so I had to wait for all the hair to grow back ... I trim VERY carefully under the corner of her eyes and under the eye itself...also ...on the bridge of her nose just a little between the eyes....I don't touch any head hair ever...it's something you can keep up with yourself if you have a little Wahl trimmer and a non wiggly yorkie. Both mine let me do this to them and Cheri is under a year old and HATES being brushed...but for some reason will let me trim her.... I put an arrow there so you can see the area I keep trimmed |

She's beautiful!! |
Mari - I did the same thing to Stewie (cut the hair by his eyes) and I wanted to grow his, too. I am kicking myself for it because it'll be shorter than the rest and too short for a topknot when the rest is long. |

Mari - do you shave the tops of Esme's ears? What do you use? |

Some yorkie just have thin coats. You should have noticed it when you got her. She might never have a good coat, but you never know. Yorkies should start changing their colors around 4 months. Look close to the skin area and as they get older, you will see what color they will eventually be. |
1 Attachment(s) you all have beautiful pups, I don't cut the hair around the eyes mainly cuz I want it to grow out even with the rest. It takes ALOT of patients but Lexi's is starting to lay a bit... |
I would leave him like he is, he is darling! I found some really small plastic bows at the dollar store that finally hold Snoodles hair. Also, you can sew a small rubber band onto a bow and use that. The bow goes down from the top on the head. You don't put it between the ears. Stays better that way, and the hair coming up from the eyes don't have to be as long. Pat |
