Territorial of crate? Hi everyone, I’d love to hear your advice and thoughts on a behavior that Wally has started to display. He is doing really well with training so far and puppy preschool has been good for him. We have been doing clicker training, which is wonderful. However, the one thing I’m starting to notice is that he’s getting territorial of his bed and his crate. This just recently began and at first I thought he was being playful. Now I’m noticing that when I’m digging in his crate to clean it out or grab a toy, he starts nipping and getting agitated. He’ll do the same if I am doing something with his puppy bed. I will put him in his “no bite” position (having him sit in front of me while lightly holding his muzzle saying “no” gently – the trainers at our puppy preschool use this method) and once he’s relaxed, he is released. It seems to work for a short while, but the next day if I’m in his crate, he gets the same way again. What can I do to make him see that I’m not an intruder in the space? It is SO important to me to have a well behaved pup…I really want to take care of this issue now, before it becomes a bigger problem. Since this is my first dog, I don’t know if this is typical behavior or something to be concerned about. Thanks so much! |
My little Cricket used to be a little territorial about her crate. She just would seem a little anxious if I was cleaning in it. She never bit at me or anything, so I would just let it go. By the way, congrats on the new addition and how well he is doing in school! Sounds like a very nice little boy. |
Sorry, just noticed in your post your little boy is nipping about it. I definitely would not let him nip and would give the no bite command, but I think guarding it is instinctive behavior. |
Ziva guards her crate to everyone except me, both when she is in or out of it.. My husband will actually leave her in it in the morning if I'm not up. I can hear him say to her, "fine, if you are going to growl at me- stay in there!". She does not nip tho, only "talks" rudely! |
I would continue doing what your doing...be consistent with it and he will stop...Dog have very short memories...so while your training him what you told him yesterday is forgotten the next day until you reminded him...And its very nature to wanna protect his den "crate"...I would just put him in his "no bite" position before touching or cleaning his crate...and after a while of training he will get what you want...You are on the right track:thumbup: Good luck! |

Max was territorial about his xpen and crate, although he never resorted to biting. I agree with others, work on doing a sit/stay/no bite when you have to touch the crate and he will likely grow out of it quickly. Be sure to give treat rewards. :) |
