Help!! I bought two new Yorkie puppies last sunday (5/8) from a dog expo in San Antonio. My previous yorkie had been killed while playing outside by a sharpei and I was heartbroken. I just went to the show to look and fell in love with this small, cute Yorkie that reminded me of her. Not wanting him to be alone, I bought him a friend to play with from the same breeder. I named the boy Jax and the girl Ginger. Ginger is doing just fine. She has been happy and eating since the beginning. However, Jax not so well on the other hand. The breeder gave us no warnings ahead of time and volunteered they were both eating their food great! Well this proved to be a lie. Jax from the beginning had diarrhea (yellow) and would not eat his food. I attributed this to a new home and separation anxiety and let it go. But the next day we were driving home and I noticed he wasnt holding his head up appropriately and his eyes were rolling, hypoglycemia. I immediately took him to the vet and they got his blood sugar up. I never experienced this with my previous dog so I felt horrible. But basically here are my issues: Jax was sold to me as a parti yorkie - .9 lbs at 2.5 months in good health and eating Diamond? food... He refuses to eat any type of canned or dry food and has had another hypoglycemic episode this morning but luckily my vet gave me nutrical. Also, in my excitement about the puppies I didn't notice they were registered by The American Purebred Canine Society? Is this a legitimate group? My last question is that the his teeth are barely in. Could they have lied about his age? Any help regarding these issues would be appreciated! I have taken him to the vet 3 times and have incurred over $300 in vet bills on top of what I paid for him. Our family loves him and wants to not have to worry about waking up and finding him dead. :( |
I don't have any answers for you, but I figured this could use a bump! So "bump"! Good luck with your Jax, I know how hard this can be! |
haha thanks!! |
I am not a breeder and know nothing much about raising little puppies. Both of my guys were rehomes and older when we adopted them. From what I have read in my time here at YT it sounds like you were lied to about the age. If Jax is just now getting teeth and is only .9 (is that ounces) there is no way he could be 2.5 months old. I have never heard of that registry either. Good luck with your little ones. It sounds like you have your hands full and that you are being a very good owner, getting the proper vet care and all. Oh I just about forgot to Welcome you to YT.:) |
Thanks! I'm calling the breeder again tonight to see if I can get more information about the registry and maybe have them admit what they were really feeding him since the dog food they claimed was not it. |
Here's info on the association you are speaking of: American Purebred Canine Association - About Us They offer "Designer" applications which means they register hybrids so as long as you pay them you can register any breeding. I hope Jax feels better soon. hth, Jo |
What exactly does that mean? The breeder has the parent's names pre-filled out and I contacted the registry for pedigrees. |

They have been established fairly recently, register purebreds and non-purebreds - not the reputation as the AKC has. |
Oh ok, I wasn't sure if you were implying anything. lol |
I hope Jax gets better and does ok. I agree that he cannot be 2 1/2 months old if he's that small and is just starting to get his teeth. I have a feeling you have a very young puppy on your hands, or one that has failure to thrive. It will probably take quite a bit of extra care with him. As for Diamond food, Diamond makes a lot of different kinds of food so it's hard to tell which one they were giving them. You may want to think outside the box for feeding him until he eats the dog food better. I hope some others have some good suggestions for you in that area. Good luck. Keep us informed how he's doing. |
tiny puppy Ask your vet for Hills A/d:aimeeyork |
He gave me that when I went the first time and he wouldn't eat it :( |
Copied from another thread re 6 week old pup: ok, this pup needs to eat every 4 hours, a mix of grinded kibble mixed with goat's milk, if you buy the concentrated can you need to mix one can of goat's milk to one can of distilled water, grind the puppy kibble in the food processor to a very fine powder and mix it and put it in a saucer and check to see if he knows how to eat it, this process needs to be reapeated 4 or 5 times a day, with the last feeding right before he goes to bed. he is going to be lonely and Cry and cry if left alone for too long, I know I took in one of my neighbors babies because her bitch died of eclamsia and she had to work, I am a stay at home wife so I had the time to help her raise the little one, go to the pet store and buy an x pen and put his crate and pee pee pad in oposite sides, with his food and water close to the crate, that is all the space he needs for now and he will be safe and secure. and please talk to family and friends and try to have him check every 4 hours at least. hugs, Carmen in nj A little BeneBac would help too (Petco or Petsmart) |
You might want to try the little jars of chicken baby food if you can't get your puppy to eat anything else. We've had finicky eaters in the past and that did the trick. Later you can mix it with softened kibble. |
