Should I get Ruger a pet? Our local shelter is overun with cats and kittens. I was wondering what the ups and downs would be to bringing one into the house as a pet for Ruger. He seems to get along well with the neighbor's cat, but when he gets too close the cat swats at him. Otherwise, no barking or agressive behavior. |
You'd run the risk of your pup getting all worked up and excited once they did become buddies, then playful barking could become an issue and aplenty. |
Good point. He already barks like crazy when he plays with my girlfriend's dog. |
I have 5 cats and 2 yorkies and my yorkies dont bark at my cats. It is a good idea to get a kitten because they are more accepting of dogs. I think its great that you want to adopt one from a shelter |
I don't know if its a great idea to get a cat FOR your dog. But if you want a kitten it should be fine. I have always had cats with my Yorkies and it is fine. The dogs don't bark at the cats. |
I rescued a kitten within a couple months of getting my Yorkie and they are the best of friends! Mojo does not bark at Figaro my kitten. They play together and sleep together and are practically inseparable. I say go for it! |
We have been cat sitting for our youngest son's cat Max since Christmas. Max his cat lived here from the time he was a kitty, until DS moved out to go to school. His last roommate had a big dog that did not like cats, so that is why he is here with us. Bogie is scared to death of Max and Max knows it, he stalks him and swats at him, Jada he doesn't bother so much, but she isn't afraid of him and I think he knows it. I never leave them alone unsupervised as Max is bigger than both of them together. I am afraid he could bite them and hurt them really bad. If you started out with a kitten you would probably be fine, but Max is 13 years old and set in his ways. Good luck with whatever you decide. |
We have 15 cats and 5 dogs with hardly any problems. There is more fights with cat vs cat than there is with cat vs dog. It's nice that you want to adopt a kitten from a shelter there are so many unwanted kittens and cats, this is the reason we have 15. |
Ellie goes crazy when she sees a cat. Yes, she barks like mad at times and chases them. I think she thinks they are vermin that she should be catching... Most Yorkies would do fine with them, but some won't. I'd work through your current training issues before considering this. |
I also think the kitten will increase your barking issues. |

The cat would be your pet, not Ruger's. =/ It would be his playmate. And yes, if you are having barking issues and he barks when he plays, you might have that issue with a kitten/cat. Rhia looooves cats and barks at them whenever she sees them. Most she has seen run from her and she will bark and chase them. |
I didn't know of the previous threads- but I agree that if your currently using a shock collar to prevent barking- the last thing you need is a kitten. I am considering a kitten but I know it will take a lot of positive training on my part to make the kitten a part of our home. |
I think it depends on the dog. Jackson does not really like my dads cats. Over their house, the 3 dogs stay downstairs and the 2 cats stay upstairs (with a gate). If they hear a cat downstairs or a 'meow' all hell breaks loose and all the dogs go flying chasing and barking at the cats. It's over within 10 seconds but still annoying. All the dogs have been socialized to the cats and one on one they actually like them a lot more.... Jackson will allow the cats to groom him, and they sniff each other nicely when it's just the two of them, but once all dogs are involved, all bets are off. I don't think I could ever enjoy a peaceful household with Jackson and a cat and have no desire to ever try. |
Oh I see I didnt realize a shock collar was being used |
Honestly, my first thought when I saw your post was you should get a kitten or a cat for YOU and not your Yorkie. We have a cat, Avery who has lived in the house since I brought Sophie Kate home but he was here first and it was her job to adjust to him. They get along well but there are times when Sophie Kate tries to boss him around, Avery being the big sweetheart he is takes it until I step in. My thoughts are if you are prepared to teach both your dog and your cat how to co-exist it might be a good idea. If your thinking you will get a kitten/cat as a "pet" for your Yorkie probably not a good idea. I should add that adopting a cat has expenses also, they need shots, flea treatment, spay/neuter and where I live you have to license them. I know shelters are over fun with Kittens and Cats, but it is best to get one only if you are prepared to have another family member. |
I absolutely love watching my dogs play with my cousin's cats when we lived together. They all got along great although when my cousin brought home Trixie as a tiny kitten, Smokey was just too much for her to handle and scared the crap out of her. After awhile she just took his licking (literally). He wouldn't quit licking her in the face. I honestly think he was trying to take care of her because she was pretty sick for awhile with a respiratory illness. Ask the shelter if you can bring Ruger to visit some kittens to see how they react together before you bring him/her home. I think it's great you are willing to adopt a kitten/cat. This is the time of year when they are all overrun by them. |
