How long do you let puppy out of crate? Hi, Just wondering how long you play with your puppy before putting him/her back in the crate (30 minutes, an hour, more or less)? I've heard that until your puppy is 5-6 months that they should spend most of their time in the crate. |
I've never heard of leaving a puppy in a crate most of the time until they are 5 or 6 months old. When Sophie was a new puppy she slept in her crate at night and went into it for naps but if I could watch her she stayed out of her crate and we played and cuddled most of the time. We left the door open so she could go in it if she felt tired. The only other time she was in her crate was if I was house cleaning and couldn't keep an eye out for her or we had to leave the house for a couple of hours. Now she sleeps with us and can stay home alone for short periods with run of the house privileges without getting into mischief. |
ZoE isn't confined to her crate other than for travel. I used a playpen for the first few weeks, to get her to use her potty pads. Once she got the hang of that, I then opened a side of the playpen so she could get to her potty pads whenever she needed them. Now, she just turned 5 months old and she's has the run of the house (other than a construction area I'm working on, which is blocked off). It's my understanding that people that use crates do so to outdoor potty train or if puppies are teething really bad & chew up stuff. ZoE is teething right now, but she doesn't chew any of my furnishings, just her toys. I think I seriously lucked out with this pup :) |
ugg hate crates!!! By and expen.. I think its cruel to leave a puppy in a crate all the time!! :thumbdown |
When I potty train, I rely mostly on the dog's schedule and watching them for keys to when it is time to take them outside - otherwise, the dog is living in the house with me and crate time limited. When I have to go out, take a shower, do some work, clean house, the puppy goes in the crate and then immediately when I am home again or done with the work/chore, the puppy is back outside for a potty break and then inside the house living with me. The crate is just for when you can't directly observe them or if you use it for naptime or night for sleeping. Really, dogs in training should not be left in the crate except for those reasons. For the sake of the dog, they should not live or even spend much time in the crate. |
I want to add that the crate worked well while she was a puppy for outside potty training. She never went potty in her crate. She ate dinner about 5:00 pm and we let her outside a couple times after that and put her to bed about 9:00 pm. She waited for us to take her out at about 4:30 am. After potty training we rarely used the crate except for traveling. |

Mia is only in her crate if she wants to go into it. When she was a puppy we used an expen, if I was busy. I wouldn't trade those puppy breath kissy days for anything. By watching her, I learned when she needed to go out. She would walk fast when she needed to pee. Would of never caught that in a crate. Hope you consider other options! |
As long as they want as long as they are supervised by someone who is responsible enough who can get them out side if any attemps to potty in the house arrises. Once they fall asleep they go back to the cage. Because if they fall asleep you think "I have time" and you get busy doing whatever, once they wake up the first thing they will do is go potty on the floor. |
I thought the crate was just for sleeping and when you were not home. but you are likely talking about trying to train the dog for housebreaking. I had an expen and left it open and let Teegy walk in and out all the time to get used to it being his space, but I never locked him in it when I was home |
I don't agree with that at all...a puppy should spend most of their time OUT of the crate. That means you have to watch the puppy every minute if it's not house trained, which is a pain, yes. We would have family members trade off on puppy-watching, and if we were all too busy or gone for a while, we would put him in his crate no more than an hour or so. The crate is for sleeping. |
I think it's the opposite. It's one thing to be getting your pup use to the crate with training methods (i.e. putting th the crate and standing by it and if he or she isn't whinning opening up the crate and praising) but not as an all day affair. We only use the crate if my husband or I are not home. Other then that, Gizmo is out and about. |
