My new Yorkie
 

Hi Everybody,

Back in Jan or Feb. I wrote on this forum that my sweet angel Truffles had passed away at the age of 15 on Christmas Eve. I got such nice responses from many of you that help me with my grief. The grief is still there, but, I have a new puppy. I got 'Coco' 2 weeks ago at the age of 12 wks. from a very well known breeder that, unbelievably, lives less than a half mile from my house! So, I feel lucky and honored that I got one of her pups. She has bred Yorkies (over 200 champions) for at least 40 yrs. In fact, Coco's dad is a grand champion!
She is absolutely adorable and we're so happy and feel so lucky to have her. We've fallen in love with her, of course. She'll be 14 wks. tomorrow. She was 2 lbs. 6 ozs. when she came home, and I'll bring her to the vet in 2 wks. for her next shots.
I knew I would want a new pup, but, wasn't sure about when to get one as I was still so sad and emotional from our loss. Coco has definitely made us much happier and I'm so glad we got her when we did.
So, I just wanted to announce my new adoption.

Also, there is a question I have. I did not crate train the first time around, but am definitely doing it now. I'm wondering what opinions anyone has on whether or not to withhold water before bedtime, and how long before if you do recomend it. Any suggestions??

I'm so sorry to hear about Truffles, but I can imagine that Coco is helping to ease the pain a little. Congratulations on your new baby! My little one just joined the family a week ago. :)

I am so sorry for the loss of your baby Truffles, and congrats on your new baby Coco. I can't offer any advice on crate training as I have never crated my two. I just wanted to welcome you and offer my sympathies and congratulations.

I remember Truffles story , and I am still grieving with you......So happy you have a new aby to help with your loss and of course not to replace but to help you heal.
An answer to your question, hmm I am no expert just a 26 yr yorkie owner, I wouldn't withhold water as I don't think a baby that age could hold their urine for that many hrs. anyhow. I really don't know though.
Would love to see pics of the new one as I am waiting for mine to come home soon.

I am so happy you have a new little one in your life to help heal your heart. Truffles is smiling down on you glad you are feeling some joy again. Congratulations.

Congrats! We crate train our dogs. We don't withhold water but you do have to let the puppies out frequently in the beginning. Tradition holds the a yorkie pup can hold it as many hours as months old they are. 3 months = about every 3 hrs. Good luck!

Congrats on the new puppy. Mine is now 5 months old and doing well with the puppy pads as well as going outside. I did not use the crate but used a playpen. Works like a charm. She has more room and I can put a puppy pad down as well as have her bed in there. She would use the pad as she would not want to mess her bed. They are so small I don't think she could hold herself for more than a couple of hours at this point. Good luck.

I have NEVER crated my dog either , its not my thing. I did use a play yard which in my opinion is much better for a puppy. I put bed, food water toys on one end and pee pads on the other. I think puppies need space to play and excercise.

these are great you can make different shapes and use it if you go out in the yard, beach, friends cookouts. I love mine!

Hi and thank you everyone for your congrats and input. I wasn't withholding water before bedtime, but wasn't sure if I should as some of the books I've read say to. But, all those books, I'm sure, are for larger breeds. I never heard the idea about the relation from age to being able to hold their urine. Cool!
Actually, I was never a fan of crates, until now. You see, we loved our dear Truffles, BUT, she had us trained almost immediately because we had never had a dog before her. So, we were always interrupted during meals, etc. And, if we gated her, she'd bark. That's why, we're doing things differently this time with Coco. She doesn't stay in the crate as much as we've been told she should, but, it's working out OK. We have a larger ex-pen for her, so she has plenty of room to play when we're not holding her.
Even though I've already 'raised' one Yorkie, this is like a new experience and I'm so grateful for the help and advice all of you have to give.
I tried to post a pic of her, but, apparently my file JPEG files is too large for this forum. Does anyone know how I can do it? FYI, my file is over 3 MB and it says they only allow 200KB. I'm not overly computer savvy, so help would be appreciated.
