Belly Bands...? So I'm tossing back and forth the idea of getting a belly band for Gizmo. It'd only be used when he's in the crate, which isn't that much, 4 hours max. Reason being, is s since he was a BYB/Puppymill furbaby, he has no problem peeing in his den. I've tried everything, taking away his water two hours before, making sure he potties before he goes in. And still he does it...Sometimes. I have never heard of belly bends until I got on this website and I was curious if they really work. Do they help aid the dog in not wanting to potty anymore since it's so close to their body and they don't like the feeling? Any comments? |
In my experience it does not make them not want to potty in it, it just protects the things you do not want them peeing on. I had 2 leg lifters here and belly bands were a god send. Of course we went thru many many pads but it kept the furniture from being ruined. |
I'm so glad you asked this! I just got back from the store looking for belly bands... Oliver is a puppy mill rescue and not doing well in the peeing department... I got some great suggestions from this site to try a belly band. I found them but they didn't have Oliver's size. I'm anxious to see the responses you get! |

The ones without elastic are much more comfy for the dogs. I used one for awhile on my male he would pee in it in the beginning but after awhile it was dry all the time. I still watch him very close. I was band free for months. Then I got new carpet. He was sniffing away so I put it back on. Sure enough for one day he used it. Pee evereytime I took it off to go outside. Now we have been dry for two days. |

I recommend the custom made ones from any YT member. I honestly think these are good to use in moderation. Belly bands can be used as a band aid, (have them wear it all the time) but what does that teach the pup? In your case, I would use it in the crate. Clean the crate out real well to eliminate all smells, and have him wear the belly band. You should also take him out to potty right before crate time, and immediately after. |
I use belly bands on my 14 year old toy poodle. That's why this time I bought a girl Yorkie. That leg lifting is just horrible. We had another toy poodle was fixed and pee'd on the pads like a girl. That was wonderful. Anyway, Honeybear now has thin hair aound where the belly bands were. I'm not sure if it's his age or from the bands. They are a life saver for me. I use the human "dependable" pads in them so that I don't have to wash the bands after every changing. They should work fine for you in the kennel. |

Like someone else said, they just protect the things you don't want peed on, they don't really deter the dog from going. Also, be careful how long the dog has it on, if they do pee in it, you don't want the urine sitting next to their skin too long. I use mine when someone first comes to my house (my male has excited urination)- I take them off within 10 minutes of the person coming in. I also use them when I visit family and want to make extra sure their won't be a problem, but I check every 30 minutes and if it is wet, clean him good with a wipe and then change the band. And I have to second (or third) the recommendation for the bands from t- bumpkins and co. They are great! And of course Cathy is always the best to work with! |
They are so worth the money!! They are fabulous! I have a Maltipoo that we use the belly bands on, he has issues marking his territory. (He does it on people) so we use them when we go to a playgroup with other dogs and it works FABULOUS!! I totally recommend it!!!! Good luck! |
Yeah I agree I wouldn't have him in it 24/7. He doesn't pee in the house at all, he rings the bells to go out to go potty. It's simply in the crate. Probably separation anxiety. And it's not all the time, but who knows. Think Cathy is going to get another order from me. |
