How come he doesnt let me know when he has to go outside all the time? Hi All, Rudy is approaching 5mths he is doing great w/the potty thing now. He sleeps in his crate from 10p til 6am and is fine the other night he heard me get up to use the broom at 3am and than he started to cry so my hubby let him out and he went to the bathroom both peep and poop. But the other day he peed on the floor and didnt even cry bark to let us know he had to go out? When do u guys see this improving from ur experience? I am home and I literally let him out every hour to go pee just b/c I can. But there are times he is in the crate and I am out for 3 hrs max and he is fine so I dont get it. I just want him to bark and let me know he needs to go out. If I say do u want to go out and get his leash he knows where he is going very smart. Maybe he is still young huh? Thanks |
What I've discovered with any dog, but Yorkies especially is right when you think you have them trained. There's a minor set back. Example, Gizmo rings the bells to go potty outside (they are bells attached to the door we use to take him out). However, yesterday, my husband came around the corner and there was a little puddle. What I'm trying to say is like little kids, Yorkies can have accidents too. Expecting your puppy at 5 months to bark to let you know to go out may not be the que he knows. Honestly though, at 5 months and he's that well trained with being in the crate and consistently going outside to go potty is awesome. Many Yorkies have many set backs at 18 months let alone 5. So, basically keep at it. I don't know if I would expect him to bark to go out to go potty, but try using the bell method. It really works especially if I'm away from Gizmo and am doing dishes and can't see him walk to the door. Hope this helps!! |
I used to think my dog would never tell me when he needed to go out. But, after probably about 8 months, I realized he actually was...I was just missing the signal....he would come up to me and make a snort/sneeze sound....the problem is that he would do the same thing when he wanted to play too! I thought he was just being demanding (he would fetch his ball non-stop, all day long if he could) and I didn't want to acknowledge this for fear of reinforcing a negative behavior. Somehow I eventually put two and two together and realized that the snort-sneeze noise had multiple meanings! So, maybe your dog is giving you a signal he needs to go out and you don't recognize it, because he's not letting you know in the way you want or expect. |
Kody will go stand/sit at the door or around the door when he has to go out. Sometimes if I don't see the signal he will come and bark in my face. If we totally miss it, then he will pee on he carpet (which is rare). The poop thing is narrowed down to twice a day - usually early morning and evening. During the day while at work he's in his crate. As soon as we get home, it's off to potty outside. |
