Trachea I was in the vets office today when I noticed a lady with a yorkie on a leash. He had a collar on. I had to open my mouth and tell her that she should have a harness on and not a collar. She was annoyed that I suggested anything and responded to me "he doesn't really pull". I guess she thought I was being rude. |
It was kind of you to look out for the Yorkie. I hope later on she does some research and realizes you were right. |
I always feel obligated to speak up when I see someone walking a Yorkie on a collar too, and it's not always well-received. I'm glad you spoke up - at the very least, you made her *think* about what she was doing. Maybe that will inspire her to do a little research! |
Im sorry that the lady didnt recieve what you had to say. But maybe she will start thinking about it later. I have 2poodles that seem very sturdy on the outside and loving to play. They both were born with CT and are now 9yrs old. We have been so careful with them all of their lives but today I finally had to go talk to the vet and get perscription meds for them. Hopefully a low dose will help them both and they will get to continue to play. Little Mina loves them both and follows them everywhere they go. |

I wish someone would have told me. Hershey is my first dog so I had no idea that a regular collar could be harmful. He has collapsed trachea, although I was told it wasn't due to the collar. I always wonder though if he would be better if I knew that. It makes me mad that his first vet never told me. |
All you could do was make her aware. I am glad I picked up not using a collar on Minnie from here. Maybe she should find this site, its very knowledgeable on here. |

you put the thought in her head. Maybe now she'll think about it &/or do a little research, and make a better choice for her pup, because you spoke up! |
But what surprised me was that I was at the vet's office - out in the waiting room - she was checking out -THE VET SHOULD HAVE TOLD HER. Not me! Maybe I should think twice about coming to this vet again. |

I told my vet about using harnesses over collars and he thought that it was a good idea, but it hasnt ever been suggested to me. I have 4 small dogs,2 of which were born with CT and noone has ever said anything to me about a harness. I read it here, took everyone to the petstore (that was a cart full),tried on and purchased 4 new harnesses. They all walk so much better on a leash now. |
I use harnesses for all 3 of my dogs, even my big guy. When I worked at the shelter we had a female pit bull mix come in with CT - poor girl. Since meeting her I tell everyone to use harnesses for their dogs. I don't think that any dog should be subjected to that much pressure on their necks, I sure wouldn't like it! I don't understand why vets don't mention this to all of their clients! At least you tried, maybe that yorkie owner will take what you said to heart and get a harness. :) |
