New Owner Questions We just got a Yorkie this weekend and I have so many questions but I'll try to limit them to a couple. Should I stick to the breeder's feeding schedule or is it okay to change it? He left food out all the time but I've read that he only needs feeding once or twice a day. I was told that Louis is trained to pee pads and outside. So far he has had three accidents, neither on the pee pad, and gone outside twice. He doesn't have a "tell" that I can notice and I'm not sure when to take him out. I've been taking him out about thirty to forty five minutes after he eats or drinks. Not had much luck with him going though. Louis is almost two years old so he should have the hang of this by now....or at least I was lead to believe that. Any advice appreciated.:) |
Not sure on the feeding thing, so I will leave that to the wonderfully knowledgeable people here to address. As for the potty issue, I'd say you may have to give him a little time since he is in new surroundings. You may have to spot re-teach the potty pad and outside training. New surroundings can be difficult for some dogs to get used to ultra quick. Give him some time and I am sure he will get into the swing of things once he is used to his new home. Good luck! |

As far as feeding, some people like to free feed (leave food out all the time), but I use a twice a day schedual (I have one dog and one cat in my crew here that would just eat it all up anyway lol). Don't use once a day with a Yorkie, they're too small. How is he eating for you so far? If he's used to it being available all the time, it may take some adjustment for him to get used to having to eat "meals" instead of just "picking" throughout the day. If you have no other pets and he's not overweight at all and you don't mind leaving it out, then it is fine to do. Just keep in mind that you're not going to just keep the bowl full at all times - only give his recommended about per day, when he finishes it, that's it till tomorrow. It's really up to you how you want to go with that and you can also base how you go on how he seems to eat (whether he seems to gobble it up or only little bits numerous times a day). Good luck:D |
