Question about feeding and amounts.. When I first adopted Foxy, she refused to eat. I put her on a better food and now she is currently eating Royal Canin (finishing out the bag) mixed with Natural Balance small bites. Now I cant stop her from eating..lol..The bowl is empty she is looking for more. Question is what is the appropriate amount to be feeding a 4 1/2 lb. yorkie? she was super skinny when I got her , now she is getting a nice little round belly, but I dont wanna make her fat..lol..Do you think she is eating more because she finally feels comfortable with her new surroundings? Just curious. THanks! |
Yes, be careful. :) Little ones can gain pretty easily. I prefer a lean dog over a tubby one. :) Jackson is a healthy active 16lbs and eats 1/2 cup per day of Acana kibble (1/4 in the AM, 1/4 in the PM, both times about a tablespoon of wet food added). Acana is about 430 kcal/cup so it's a calorie dense food meaning less of it needs to be fed. For a good like Natural Balance, I believe it's less calories, so if I was solely feeding NB, I'd probably up the amount to 3/4 cup per day for Jackson. I read somewhere that NB Sweet Potato and Venison is around 368 calories per cup -- it's not on their website though, not sure of the other formulas. I just go by his body condition and how much activity he's had. For example, last week on Sunday we did about 3 miles of walking, 2hrs at the dog park, and 3-4hrs of running around my dads fenced in yard and just being outside. He was REALLY hungry this day and I could tell -- so I fed him a bit extra. |
Wylie get a shot glass in the am and a shot glass in the pm. I only feed dry kibbles Sometimes he does not even finish it in the pm but the am feeding he always finishes. Taking him tomorrow for a weigh-in but I think he is about 4 lbs. |
Ok, awesome thanks! I didnt even realize she had been eating so much until 2 days ago, when I looked at her belly and was like omg..lol..I def. want to put a stop to the over feeding asap! I think I was too consumed with getting her to eat to begin with, that I hadnt been paying attention to her gaining weight. |
Sense Mina only weighs 3 1/2# I suddenly feel so conserned with how much she is eating. Thank you for starting the thread, it answered a question that I had floating around in my head. |
Thanks and no problem! I really didnt think I was over feeding Foxy, but her stomach tells a different story. Dont get me wrong she isnt fat, but I can tell shes picked up some weight, so I want to stop that before she actually gets fat..lol...Does that make sense, its been a longggg day..haha.. |
