Me and my "guard dog"
 
I was sitting in the living room when ZoE & I both heard something in the breezeway. ZoE, stared towards the kitchen & did a low growl. My heart started beating faster...my Mum was over visiting earlier this evening and I couldn't remember if when she left I locked the door behind her. Now every CSI, Criminal Minds type show is playing in my head and I'm thinking someone is in my breezeway ready to attack. So what do I do? That's right...I scoop up my 5lb dog for protection and go to investigate.

Of course, I had (probably on auto-pilot) locked the door after my Mum left. So there I am standing in my breezeway with ZoE under my arm, when it hits me how rediculous it is how much safter I feel with such a tiny dog with me.

It reminded me of when we had our last yorkie & lived in a two story house with finished basement, and my kids would scoop up our then yorkie, Chelsea, whenever they had to run upstairs to their rooms or to the basement for something.

Anyone else feel German Shepard type protection with their little pup?

They can scare you to death and make you feel safe at the same time!:D

I remember I had hung a suit on a door across the hall from our room and in the middle of the night my little guard dog started barking at it. I had been sound asleep and that scared me to death!:eek: I never hung anything there again.

Yorkies are the best little Guard Dogs of any !
Sight, smell, hear, alert and territorial, mine are
aware of everything that goes on, around my house.

I train mine to alarm and stay back, and are praised
highly when they do a good job.
The safest thing for them, and the worst thing for
an intruder, is to let ME know, and I'll handle it from there.

That's so true! I had a similar situation to the op's. Last night, someone in my building or in he buildin next door was having some sort of religious activity late last night. Kaji sat right by me, ears perked, and growled each time the neighbors got loud. (which was often, there was even screams coming from he neighbor's apt) Kaji held vigilance all night. He growled, and even barked. Poor pup was exhausted by morning.

My husband says he never slept so soundly as an adult after he moved out on his own before he and I started living under the same roof with my yorkie, Cricket. He says he can rest in peace knowing what good little watch dogs they are. He babysat her when we were dating and I had to go out of town, and he was surprised at how protective they are.

Now my little Gidget is not quite as fearless. She will sounds the alarm but then want you to pick her up because she is afraid. She is littler than Cricket, though. Cricket would have fought anything that came through the door uninvited, all 6.5 lb of her!

Bubba is afraid of thunder but Sissy is my guard dog. If we are in bed and she hears a noise, she jumps on top of me to guard me and starts barking. Nothing like being woken from a sound sleep with a dog standing on your chest:D

I 100% trust in my little guardian. My roommate get's home after I'm already asleep and Roxy's shrill bark wakes me up every single time my roommate get's home. Although it gives me a heart attack every time it happens I wouldn't think of trying to reverse that behavior ..I plan to live alone in the near future and I'd rather have an overly sensitive alarm than a confused one

LOL..I think I have a confused one, she hears a noise and gets excited thinking someone is coming to see her..haha..:D

Mine will bark even if I walk in the room at night and startle them. To get them not to do it you have to announce to them you are coming into the room before you enter it

Much of the time, we expect our Males to "stand up" for us, BUT !!!,
Female Yorkies are not to be dismissed for their lack bravery or
protective natures.

My little Becca is a total terror, when it comes to HER space
(house/yard/everything), which used to be ours, before she got here ! :rolleyes:

In a traditional Yorkie Pack, the Females assume a lot of the responsibility
for security and other duty's, with the Males sorta laying back, and
intervening only when necessary. Additionally, Males have to be quite
strong to hold the Alpha roll, Female Yorkies are quite capable.

have to be startled ! :D

LOL - too funny!!! My friend had a lab/border collie mix that was the same way. She always used to kid around saying "Mitzi will take the burglars around the house and show them where mom hides the good stuff."

Sammy is a great watch dog too!! I always feel safe when I'm alone because I know he would alert me to anything. I can be asleep and wake up when I hear his deep growl. I tell him to Show Mommy and he will go near the window or the door or wherever he heard the noise. It's usually a cat or a person walking by but it's nice to know that our pups alert us to noises that they hear.

this is such an awesome idea! I'll work on this command.
