Here is a question I can't answer My friend's sister just got a yorkie. It is a female and the breeder let her have it at 6 weeks old. Yes, I know I already told them how bad this is. Now, my friend comes today and asks me a question. Someone told her sister to give the puppy Karo syrup every day. I told her I didn't think she should do this because of the sugar. I said maybe it was to use Karo for hypoglycemia. But the sister says no, it was to use it everyday. I can't imagine that being right but I told my friend I would ask the experts. So, what do you think? |
I wouldn't do it. I think it is better to try and let them regulate their sugar on their own and only give them karo/ nutri-cal in an emergency situation. Although, I only have experience with older puppies- so maybe a breeder can jump in with advice with young ones. Is this puppy even eating solid food yet? |
From what I have learned I do not think you would want to give the Kayro everyday. It would cause blood sugar spikes. I have heard some people put it in the water but I think that would be like drinking a coke everyday vs drinking water. I think it would be best to have 3 to 4 small balanced meals over the course of the day to keep the the puppy from going into hypoglycemia. I have heard also that you want to feed protein after giving the kayro or the Nutrical as the sugar will cause the levels to go up and then they will crash and it is best to keep the levels even. I will defer to those more knowledgeable YT members. And as you and I have learned the pup should have stayed until it was 12 weeks old for the best developement so this breeder may not be knowledgeable about what is ultimately the best care for Yorkies in my opinion. It is good your friend has you to look out for her and her Yorkie. Best Wishes |
Not a good idea, I have never heard of that. Nor would I ever do it. It should only be use in an emergency only when they have low blood surgar and are suffering form Hypoglycemia. |

Her vet would be her best source of information for her pup. |
She says she is eating Blue Buffalo. She said the karo makes the puppy really hyper. |

Blue Buffalo is a really good quality food. I don't understand why she'd feel the need to supplement it is Karo if she's feeding the pup regularly. |

Not knowing what state you live in the breeder may have broken the law as some states prohibit the sale of pups until 8 weeks of age......should this pup contract parvo/rabies the breeder may be held responsible too.....as in some states there are lemon laws. No Karo Syrup or Nutri Cal as a hyperglycemic prevention....both can contribute to sugar diabitis or can contribute to a hyperglycemic attack by using it as a prevention. |

I am in Arkansas. And thank you so much!!! I will pass this on to her. |
When I got Cali at 9 weeks and 1 lb (before YT) the byb told me to give her mini marshmallows everyday. When I took her to the er vet with her first hypoglycemic attack, they told me to stop giving her them immediately as it could cause her to have attacks and other problems. So I would not give syrup to the puppy. I agree a vet needs to see this puppy ASAP. |

I do however use beef flavored baby food mixed with goats milk poured over ground kibble for added flavor. I use it in different thickness depending on the age of the pup. Maybe you could use the baby cereal as a thickening aggent. |
