male yorkie questions We have had many female dogs over the years. We decided on a Yorkie this time and opted to go male. We are not planning on breeding him, so what is the normal age for neutering? And he has already started "acting":eek: like a male. Is this normal for a 3 month old puppy? I hate to scold him for what "comes naturally". But it can be a bit embarrassing and hard to explain to children.:confused: |
Hi and Welcome to YT! I don't neuter males until they're a bit older, around 1 year. My neutered 14 year old still humps, but I do interrupt him if he's being inappropriate, by removing the object of his passion, or just telling him 'no'. Girls do it too, even after being spayed, so I think it may be a Yorkie thing! |

However, they must become seated....there is ring that eventually holds them in place. But, until that time they can pull them up at will...usually when they've been startled or in an unsure situation. Now allowing them to hump does assit in bringin those little testes down. Now when to nueter, I recommend not until his growth plates close, your vet will tell you when that happens. You can have whatever retained puppy teeth he may have removed at the same time. This way he only has to be putunder anesthesia once. |

One of my boys was acting 'male' when he was 3 months.... we got him neutered at 6 months at the advice of my vet. The other one never really acted 'male' so we were not in a hurry to neuter. He actually didn't get neutered until he was 4.5 years old. |
I had Rocco neutered at 6mos. he never did that little dirty deed before he was neutered and he still does not do it...Thank goodness!! |
I have only ever owned male dogs [7 of them]... we just got our first girl Easter Sunday. Because of hormones, growth, etc you will be safe to do it at 1yr, they also say behavioural problems in male dogs usually come from being neutered under the 6 month mark... don't take my word for that though it's just something a few vets have told me and I know not everyone experiences it. BUT the humping may not stop. My 3 year old pom still humps and he's been neutered for 2 years. I've never had any other males hump after being neutered... so just depends on the dog. Pooter has also learned the word "not okay" and he'll stop as soon as I say that and usually doesn't do it again [for some time.] |

I had a spayed female Schipperke who would hump our cat occasionally. I also knew a female American Eskimo dog who humped people's legs. None of my male dogs have shown this behavior.... ever. Oliver was neutered at 5 months and Ziggy was over 2 years when he was finally neutered. It will stop, and I think that if you make a big deal out of it and draw attention to it he could possibly do it more. Puppies are like children and will continue behaviors that get them attention. A quick "No" and redirect him to another activity or toy should be all that you need to do to get him to stop. |

Yes the vet told us that when they're 3 months old humping means nothing sexual. We have a 5 month old shih tzu who is constantly humping our shorkie Zoe who is spayed. |
My yorkie got neutered at 5 months. He never humps anything. But he was already lifting his leg marking thinks at 3 months. I dont think its a yorkie thing at all. Its just certain dogs do, and certain dogs dont. |
My boys were neutered closer to 10 months...I just felt more comfortable waiting. Both my boys have a 'lover dog' and we don't scold them either. It's just something they do, and they never bother humans about it (ie, leg humping or whatever). |

Haha had a pomeranian before Pooter, he was a humper. We bought him this ugly red stuffed bull dog that was about his size, that was his lover dog! He never mounted a leg, arm, foot, dog... just that toy! Another idea, to deal with your pup's desire to mount... get him a big stuffed dog lol. |
