Big Dog Aggression Hey There, I was wondering how many of your dogs have Big Dog Agression. I've noticed that Troy does abosolutely wonderful with small to medium sized dogs. I was shocked to see he plays/interacts well with shepard mixes and even a great pyranese. But I have noticed he has an aversion to boxers, pit pulls or breeds similiar in size and physical features. Despite those dogs being trained and friendly. |
Mine are afraid of big dogs. They really dont have any kind of aggression |
Our dogs were raised with Basset Hounds and they get along perfectly. We have a Yorkie, a Shorkie and a Shih Tzu they are crazy about the Bassets and won't go out without them. They also get along with my friend's St Bernard but we've never had them near any other big dogs so I couldn't tell you. |
We have an Akita and Alice gets along wonderfully with her. Here's just a thought that immediatly popped into my head when I read this - you said they are fine with a Great Perinese, that's a dog WAY bigger than a boxer or pit bull. Are YOU nervous around boxers and pit bulls?? If you are concerned about dogs with those features (it's very common for people to be nervous around pit bulls especially since they have a bad rep) then you are most likely transfering your own nervousness to your Yorkies. That's my number one guess as to what's happening whether you notice it or not, just based on the way you described "dogs with those type of features". Dogs don't descriminate against other dogs based on looks, it's the temperment and energy that dog gives off, so another possibility (if YOU're not worried about these breeds) is that it's just their excitemnet level. Pits and Boxers tend to be high energy dogs (Perinese (sp?) tend to be mellow), so even if the dogs they've met are friendly, it could be that they seems too hyper to your Yorkies and they don't like that energy. |
Belle is fine with the big dogs she knows. She has an 80lb Aussie mix brother. My parents have a 115lb Shep/Rottie mix (14 yrs old) and she likes him, too. She's met some others and has been ok. However she barked very aggressively at a big Scottie when at our vet. Oliver is fine with almost all big dogs. He doesn't like pit bulls. My future SIL has one who is a few months older than Ollie, she is a responsible bully breed owner and he is VERY well trained. He's never liked that dog, and seems to have transferred that dislike to every pit bull he's seen. He doesn't bark, just growls at them. That could come from me, though. I've known some wonderful pit bulls, but don't really trust them as a whole. |

I dont think I'm nervous around boxers or pit bulls. That's what I actually grew up around. When I introduced Troy to a pit bull puppy the same size he was that was mellow as can be, Troy just growled and was ready to jump out my arms to get to him. He's done that with just about every pit bull he's met all except for one. Thanks for that insight because I didn't think of it. |
Casey (RIP), would be fine around dogs his size, but put him within reach of bigger dogs, and he got down right nasty. His list looks like this....nip a ahusky, and Black Lab....went after a Rotty, German Shepard, Great Dane and a Boxer. The two that he nipped, he was on a leash (as always), and was going over to check them out....nice and slow, thought we were making progress....then he jumped and gave them a nip. The one's we went after, were walking by us minding there own business. Now we have Frisco, who has never been a problem in 17 years (unless he's attacked, even then, he turns and growls)....and Codi, who is great, until he gets cornered....give him time and let him sniff, he's great...charge him and all bets are off |
Boxers have a certain style of play. I've noticed a LOT of dogs get irritated by Boxers. They're, well, boxy... they like to box and use their paws a lot. Same with Boston Terriers. They have a certain way of playing that a lot of dogs, especially if they are smaller and maybe feel more vulnerable, don't like. Jackson has honestly gotten along with every dog he's met. He is not particularly fond of a Lab I dogsit though just because he's sooo obnoxious. He does not understand how to play, especially with little dogs. So they always stay on leashes when they see each other. |
Ruger tends to be dominant with all dogs but not aggressive. When he get up to a bigger dog he stands on his hind legs, gets up as high as he can and tries to climb on the bigger dog's head. If the bigger dog does that, and they often do, when he comes down on Ruger he just flattens him, but so far it's been all in good fun. I want Ruger to understand the consequences of playing with a big dog without constantly pulling him back. However, I am extra cautious with Pit Bulls and will often pick him up until having a talk with the owner. So far no problems. |
