i cant figure out the age of my yorkie pup! Hi everyone! im new to this site and decide to join because most questions i looked up online directed me here. My boyfriend and I got a girl yorkie pup from a newspaper ad of a family that was too busy to have a dog. We were told from the family that sold her to us that she was 12 weeks old at the time and then when we took her to the vet they told us that we were lied to and that she was only 8 weeks but they were not 100% positive. We are now having a hard time figuring out how old she really is. According to the vet she is now 15 weeks old, 4.9 lbs and we are debating whether we push for the vaccinations of a 15 week old dog or hold off. anyone have any signs of development so that we can figure out how old she might be? We tried getting a hold of the previous owners and they were very spotted on information and our vet is pretty sure that they lied to us about many things. Her ears are standing upright, she has a little bit of grey on the top of her head and she is doing ok with potty training. She is super active and we refer to her as "crazy" because she is such a huge ball of energy! haha. hope someone has some kind of answers :) thank you!!! |
Did the previous owner give you any medical history , vaccination records, registration papers or their vet info ? You deff do not want to Over Vaccinate her. |
we did ask her for her vet information so we could transfer the papers and she said that she vaccinated her herself but could not provide any paperwork. Our vet has started to revaccinate her but very slowly. she is getting 1 shot every month. |

Our vet did say that she is absolutely a yorkie and that there is maybe a 10% chance that she is a yorkie/silkie mix. We have come to the conclusion that the woman who sold her to us bred her but is not experienced. She is very happy and healthy thank goodness, but i think its pretty imporant to know her age. Thank you for the info on over vaccinating... i had no idea! |
She said that her and her husband decided not to pay extra for the papers from the breeder. i never knew that was an option when buying a yorkie from a breeder. something is funky about the whole situation. I probably would have asked all of these questions when i bought her, however my boyfriend did it as a surprise, and the first time i talked to her was when i asked to get her vaccination/medical records transfered to our vet. |
Your vet should be able to get a really good estimate of her age by looking at her teeth. It's not exact, but the vet should be able to give you an estimate that's give or take a few weeks and as more of her "baby teeth" start to fall out, that's good clues about her age (they usually go in a certain order, last being the canine teeth around 5-6 months old). I was lied to about my Yorkies age too (she was 2 months older than they said) and I knew immediatly by looking in her mouth (her adult incisers and molars were in). Once she got to what the vet and I thought was about 6 months old, we knew we were very close because her "baby" canines fell out and she had all the rest of her adult teeth. If the vet thinks she was about 8 weeks when you got her and the person you got her from said she gave the shots herself, that SHOULD have been only the first ones, so I'd just continue with what your vet recommends (2 or 3 rounds of DHPP (3 only if you're suspicious the previous owner may not have actually given any vaccinations, I would be since it's a shady situation) about 1 month apart, then Rabies one month after the last DHPP. |
Your rite something is fishy. Even when the breeder gives vacinations, they pull the label on the vac bottle & put it in a chart so THEY can keep track on what vacs they have given the pups & when they are due for the next vacs. I would call or GO to the breeder & make them give you a time frame that your pup was born & vaccinated. EVERY breeder knows when their pups were born , even when it's their very 1 litter. They are BS'ing you for some reason & I think there are laws against this. |
our vet did give us her age based on her teeth however she said that a lot of yorkies she sees are underdeveloped when it comes to losing their teeth because breeders are so persistant about "pushing them out and selling them." I would absolutely get to the breeder, however the family we got her from will not give any information to me anymore. they poof vanished. oh well! haha. Thank you everyone for the info! i think were just going to have to wait and see.... |
If they've vanished then they are most like breeders or brokers. Most disreputable breeders will say a pup is older than it really is to make it seem like it'll be smaller. If you got her at 8 weeks (by what your vet said) and the original owners said they are "a family that was too busy to have a dog" how long could they have had the dog to discover that? They are lying to you that's for sure. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for her? |

How about you post a pic of her please? |
3 Attachment(s) we paid $300 for her.... here are some recent pictures.. |
Shes adorable! I think she looks about right where your vet said, around 4-5 months. She's probably going to be about 8-10 lbs as an adult, (just my guess) since you said she's about 4.9 lbs now. |
thank you so much! i think shell be a big girl, which is wonderful because that little butt is getting into everything! haha |
