When do I let my yorky pup out of his crate to sleep and into his own bed? Hi All, Rudy is 4mths plus and is in his crate at night and during the day when I am out and he loves it just fine with it. But I would like to get him his own bed and let him out of the crate in the one room I have him gated in- b/c I do have an older yorky and they do not mix right now. So I am wondering if you have a pup and you crated him or her when did you feel comfortable letting them out of the crate to have more freedom to sleep in their own doggie bed? He has been better w/ training no accidents in the crate anymore but sometimes on the floor mostly urinating but he has gotten much better within the past month Thanks ;) |
My personal experience has worked out really well. Until I know for sure that the dog has the potty thing under control I Have an xpen set up with the crate and a bed along with a pee pad and food and water. this way it gives your pup some freedom and also a safe place if he gets scared. |

Mine all have their own crate and "ask" to go to bed at night. Around 8-8:30. Tonight Gracie wanted in her crate at 7:00 and i had to tell her "it's too early to go to bed" (yes, they figured out that early to bed is early to rise). When it is "bedtime" for them we tell them "bedtime" and they all go to their individual crate and wait for us to put them in. They have the cutesy beds (outside of a crate) for laying around/napping during the day. So I don't think you should be concerned about how long he sleeps at night in a crate...if he's happy, let him stay there at night... not to mention you know he's safe. I like to know mine aren't finding fuzz or something else they shouldn't be eating/or chewing on a cord/what-have-you while I'm asleep. |
My Male Sneakers is 2.5 yo, and My Female Becca, was almost 3 mo when I got her, and are Brother/Sister, separated by several liters. Sneakers took to Becca immediately, just like she was his puppy. Becca was restricted to (a rather large area) which had a Linoleum floor, and I put paper down in front of the Doggy Door. She had several misplacements on the Linoleum for about a week or so, but that was at night, because the Doggy Door was closed. Now at her age of 10 mo, she can "last" through the nights, and has complete access to the house 24/7. Actually, I don't take a lot of credit for potty training her, though a few scoldings were administered. Sneakers has taught her SO much, he's a great mentor, and has demonstrated the patients of Jobe, with Becca's peppiness. Getting him a Female companion, was the best thing I've ever done. I can see a genuine love between my two, their relationship is something that I do not believe that a human can match. |
I used a crate at night with Callie until she was completely potty trained and when I was certain my room was puppy proofed. |

He still sleep in his crate but at least I knew that he could get out and get some food and water and potty if he needed to--especially if I was late in getting home from work. Someone suggested putting an inexpensive shower curtain liner under everything in case there was an accident where he would missed the pad. |
as a rule of thumb . yorkie babies can only hold it for how old they are. if the baby is 4 months then they can only hold it for 4 hours at most. I crate all of mine in evenings from 830pm to 530 am. |

I never crated presto, he had his xpen setup with pee pee pad. Now he has the reign of the whole house, pees on his pad and will sleep in our bed through the night! |
I crate-trained Tibbe for about a year in that whenever he was tired or I was not actually able to have him right with me to watch, he was put in the crate, which normally coincided with him being so tired he would nap while in there. The rest of the time he was out living his life. But nights, he slept with me after the first 2 weeks I had him. During that first 2 weeks, he slept in my bed in his small carrier with my fingers sticking through the door and his chin on them. After that, he slept with me and has since. I think the reason some people have trouble with housebreaking is they give up on it too soon wanting to give their baby more time out of the crate. |
Hi yes my pup is great now in the crate w/ night time now that i made his crate smaller he goes in when we go to bed by 10pm and is up at 6am ready to go out w/ no accidents i did not do wee pads he did not know them he goes outside and has gotten much better w/ accidents in the house i will continue to use the crate since he does like it and knows it best now plus my older yorky who is 13yrs does not want to be bothered w/ him this is what makes it harder on me |
