This is really scary. Please do not leave your dogs outside unattended!

OMG this is so scary :(

kjc 05-02-2011 11:41 AM

OMG! They said two dogs were attacked in that area!

Have to comment: I thought the plant behind the guy was his hair! Where's my spectacles????

My thoughts are that as Spring comes on, birds of prey may have had a lean winter where food may have been scarce, so now, anything that moves they'll go for... these kinds of attacks seem to be more frequent each spring....

mom of 3 dogs 05-02-2011 12:06 PM

oh, this is so awful. i always look outside, up in the sky and all around before i go out with the girls. i do see quite a few hawks around from time to time. very scary

sweet_tikka 05-02-2011 12:16 PM

this happens a lot in BC where my husband is from. Hawks, Eagles, Cougars are the worst!
had a guy who bred teacup poodles and he left them out to go potty for 30 minutes and he went back out and they were all... well eaten :/

my li'l pooter is just 5lbs of pom! so scarrry.

itsbaddangel 05-02-2011 12:17 PM

We have a small lake behind us and the hawks sit on my fence to watch the fish. I've seen them swoop down on my girls  (Jazi only weighs 3 1/2 lbs). I NEVER leave them alone outside.:animal-pa

lulugirl928 05-02-2011 12:41 PM

We take Lulu for walks on the trails in the regional park and there is alot of wildlife. signs saying beware rattlesnakes and mountain lions are in the area... we never let her wander off or too far from us. We see hawks and we pick her up.. she is only 2.5 lbs.... a tasty snack.

You need to look into getting the Taurus Judge loaded with 45 LC and #4 shot. The #4 will take care of snakes, the 45 LC will take care of anything else up to 1000 pounds.

:) I would do anything to save my girls, that is for sure. However, my neighbor is a hunter and he tells me that it is a $10,000 fine to shoot the red-tailed hawk that has been hanging around. So, I go out with my girls everytime. That video of the poor pom is going to give me nightmares.

lil louis 05-02-2011 02:42 PM

Poor little dog.:( That is horrible.

I saw a hawk flying over my house two times just last week. I am not sure if it is two different hawks or the same one. My sister in law just told me that her friends yorkie was attacked by a hawk a few weeks ago. I am constantly on the lookout for hawks every time I let Louis out. Is there something you can put out in your yard to scare them off?

Lil Sis 05-02-2011 02:46 PM

That poor little puppy!!!

You can put poles up on sides of the yard and attach fishing line cris- crossed on them through out the yard making an invisible roof.

That is what my Aunt did. They have eagles on their ridge and she is so scared her pom will get taken off.

She didn't do the whole yard, just the little play area out back where the pom stays when she is outside.

celstu1 05-02-2011 02:52 PM

That is only about 40mins from my house. :( I never let my boys out alone, and my bunny roams free most of the time, but she is about 13lbs, so I think she is ok.... but that is super scary! My Dexter is only 6lbs but my Fletcher is about 13lbs.

Perrella 05-02-2011 03:01 PM

Oh, that is horrible. It's amazing that she lived, those were some nasty looking wounds.

We have big ones flying over and my DH says they are buzzards...but I just don't know for sure and it worries me to death. I keep thinking, what if he's wrong. (woo-hoo...big surprise there, ;))

Seriously, I can't tell one from the other. One of use is always in the fenced in yard with Zhoie, but she runs it and isn't on a leash.

sweet_tikka 05-02-2011 03:06 PM

We're a hunting family as well, the remington .270 does the trick on anything from hawks to bears to moose. Wolves are actually really bad up where we live, I'm SO glad we live in town as they tend to stay away from populated areas.

I once had a teach in highschool tell all of my class "It's not illegal unless you get caught"

lol!

Gatord 05-02-2011 03:08 PM

OMG, this is what scares me with my two. They don't go out without me or the BF. What really scares me is when they take off running to the other side of the yard. I have 2-acres (fenced in) and I believe everyone here knows how fast a yorkie can run. I cannot catch up with them. I really hate I can't just let them run and play.
I have seen hawks around and yes I do shoot at them with a high power b-b gun. I don't do it to kill, just trying to scare away.

One thing I would like to say about the video is why is this man leaving his 6-lb dog outside anyway? Did I hear him right that he let the dog out when he left for work?

I ask an attorney at work, if I got into trouble for killing a hawk could he get me out (just joking with him) he said yea, but burn all evidence.
LOL

Saeka 05-02-2011 03:35 PM

Ugh, that is horrible. :(
There is a hawk in the neighborhood where my parents live and my mom has seen it watching and flying around when she's walked Rhia. She always picks Rhia up and hurries home. I had to explain to my guy that Rhia will NEVER be left alone in the backyard if we ever get a house. I'm too afraid of birds or other animals getting to her, even if she's 7lbs.

And yeah, hawk attacks my dog? It's dead. I'll get rid of that evidence fast. Eff my dog being eaten by a giant bird of prey. :)

CouversMom 05-02-2011 04:26 PM

How scary! I can't believe he left the dog out while he went to work though?? That poor dog has some serious wounds...

EsmeeKimme 05-02-2011 04:41 PM

OMG! this is so scary. I am never a person to keep dogs outside anyway but just knowing how small these babies are it is scary to think that something might swoop down or out of the bushes and get them. My sweetie doesn't go out yet but he will NEVER be allowed to be out alone.

I am a country girl and I also have no issues with filling it with buckshot for my baby!

gemy 05-02-2011 04:49 PM

Ughhh I know I'm staying out of all your backyards...lol.....

So far in the city I have no hawks in backyard, but raccoons, and I saw an opposum the other day. Also we have coyotes, was a warning on the radio couple of days ago, apparently a pack of coyotes have killed dogs that were in their backyard.

We do have hawks and other bigger birds of prey at my fav conservation park.

I have my specs on and I didn't even see the plant! :D Had to go back and look to see what you were talking about. I may need new glasses.:p

This is a worrisome article for me to read. I let Betty Boop in the backyard but I'm always with her, right behind her, wherever she goes. BUT, she isn't on a leash. I guess I think I could kill a hawk with my bare hands if I had to. Seriously, it is something I think about. That poor little pom. I hope the owner doesn't leave him in the backyard, BY HIMSELF ALL DAY, ever again.

This is what I was wondering.....

He certainly learned his lesson with that one. I would never EVER leave Jackson outside alone when I'm going to be going to work, or for long periods of time... that's just asking for trouble. Poor dog- I am so happy she is alive and going to be okay!

lovespandp 05-02-2011 08:28 PM

Knowing the owner has seen hawks before in his area, WHY would he leave a little dog outside alone???

To leave a little dog alone is dumb, it is not just hawks that could have got that little dog!!

Ugh I hate people like this, it is sad.

Mom to Hot Rod 05-02-2011 08:34 PM

That is terrible. It scares me to hear something like that.

I have lots of wildlife in my neighborhood such as deer, hawks, eagles, turkey buzzards, fox, snakes, bunnies and wild turkeys, to name a few.

My neighbor, 2 houses down just confirmed with pictures that she has a big mama fox with her 3 cubs living under her shed!!! My dogs have been going nuts on our walks sniffing and running around in circles lately. Well, now we know why as my neighbor has seen the fox running from my yard to hers. I have been finding fox poo in our driveway and in front of our yard. I couldn't figure out what it was from as I have found deer poo and other dog poo around.

Hot Rod and Maggie May have been very wary as we start our walks, especially in the mornings. Sometimes they do not want to go on the walks. I guess they are smelling the foxes scent much stronger then.

Wylie's Mom 05-03-2011 05:35 AM

We need reminders all the time when something like this happens :(. We never, ever allow the furs in the yard alone - bc we too have birds of prey.

Some people aren't yet aware that their yorkies can be picked up by birds - so thank you for posting this!

sweet_tikka 05-03-2011 06:20 AM

Even a good sized 10-15lb yorkie can STILL be picked up by bigger hawks/eagles!
Some of the fish we've seen swept out of lakes have been good size 10-20lb pikes!

Be extra worried about your pups from the first snow to the end of spring. Predators become more desperate for food during the cold months due to all their prey hibernating/hiding for warmth and almost all watered areas are frozen, so no fish.
This is ANY predator... we have bears, wolves, coyotes, fox, etc. have more of a tendency to wander into population when 1. it's too cold for their prey and 2. when their habitat is being demolished.
Mind you, we should always be worried about our little dogs, but during this time be extra cautious!

Speaking from experience in hunting and living in a place with just about every type of predator animal found in north America lol.

lexi43 05-03-2011 06:51 AM

I was shocked when the man said he left his dog out when he went to work even though he knew there was a hawk attack only a couple of blocks away. I don't know how stupid people can be. I wouldn't even leave my bassets outside when I'm not home and they weigh over 55 lbs. Now because of his stupidity that little dog is going to suffer and he wakes up. Duh!!!!!!!!

I've seen two foxes now out in mid-day at my dads place on the Eastern Shore. Looked like it had mange and probably was infected with rabies. At first I thought it was a loose dog running through the farm fields behind my dads house (all the farmers dogs run loose) but looking harder, I couldn't believe it was a fox! That's the second one that's been around during the day. We are always more cautious when letting the pups in the fence now.
