What to do with Roman Hello All, I need some advice concerning Roman. He is 9 months. I adopted him from our local humane society a month ago. Well it has been about a month now. When he first came into our home he was very skittish and scared. That has worn off. He has become very attached to me. Which is fine. Well our little guy Dolce was in our home first. They had some issues with fighting. But I guess now it's playing. Roman gets pretty vicious. Especially around bedtime. He will start atacking Dolce. Dolce likes to sleep by my head. I am not sure if he gets jealous. He is very aggressive towards Dolce. Their sizes are like night and day. I should have thought about adopting Roman before I impulsivley did. He is not housetrained. I can sometimes get him to go outside to potty. But in the month we have had him I have never seen him go poo outside. To make matters worse we have a brand new house with upgraded carpet. So my husband is not pleased. I am coming to a decision about whether or not to keep him. I am attached to him but his aggression towards Dolce and too many accidents in our house is starting to make me think about keeping him. I am open to any suggestions before I go that route. Especially on the housetraining. When I am home he is happy laying on my lap (which he didn't do when we first got him) or chewing bones. Any help would be appreciated :) |
Bless his heart - Mine play pretty rough at bedtime too - it's like they know it's almost time to settle down so they go NUTS...no hurting ..just wild racing around with toys in their mouth or stealing from each other and fighting over the stolen toy - Are they playing like that ? On the training - Cheri was with me from a baby and it still took her 10 months to train - yorkies are hard and I've heard rescues are even harder - they were just never taught and poor things - its like they just don't know better. It must be so hard trying to love him and thinking maybe it's not working out...I feel for you. I bet you get lots of good ideas in this thread... I wish you the best of luck ! I wish you were in Houston - there is someone looking for a little yorkie and would be glad to have him I bet - |
I am sorry that Roman is giving you such a tough time... The only thing I can add is have you thought about an obedience type class for him? I know the one I am going to also addresses the house training issue as well as redirecting bad behavior. It might be worth a chance before you make a final...final decision one way or another. Good luck it sounds like you love him so I hope things work out for you and Roman! |
Ummmm.... How did I not know that you live in houston??? Quote:

Cause you didn't look to the left under my name ? :D :D :D :D |
Have you tried using puppy pads? They work really well with Miko. I would suggest putting the pads down where he normally pees in the house. For example, if there's a certain area in the living room that he usually pees or poos, then put a pad down there and hopefully he'll do his business on there. Also, right when you see him urinate in the wrong place, take him over to the puppy pad immediately. If he does urinate on the pad, then positively reinforce by giving a treat and make a big deal about it. My husband and I always "threw a party" every single time he did his business on the puppy pads when we were training him. It was "Good boy!" and "Good job, Miko!" hehe :) Thankfully, he's 100% potty trained! Remember it takes time and patience and probably a few months to housetrain a rescued dog. I believe that it can still be done...He's only nine months old and still a baby :) Good luck, and I hope this advice helps. |
Thank you for the good ideas. Roman's favorite thing to do is to run upstairs and do his business. Which is two flights up. LOL I have tried wee pads but neither puppy likes them. But it's a good idea to put them where he normally pees or poos. He went into my bedroom closet the other night and went poo all over my floor. His stool was loose so I had to shampoo the carpet. As far as the play both of my babies will roll around biting eachother. I have to grab Dolce and lay him next to me so they stop. Sometimes Roman makes Dolce cry. When I am at work during the day we have a nice area in our garage where they go for the day. When I open the garage they are so happy and excited to see us and get out of there. LOL I am going to give Roman a chance. I am thinking maybe his previous owners did't take him out enough. We have had Dolce for 2 months and I am not having too much trouble training him. I know it takes time and consistency. It just gets frustrating. Thanks again for your replies |

Roman needs to be in confined area with a strict schedule to have any hope of training him. I will send you my housetraining info if you'd like. e-mail me at sylvanyorkies@yahoo.com. |
Thank you so much:) |
You're welcome...it's on the way. |

An inexpensive alternative that might help... My husband bought plastic lattice at Home Depot and cut it to fit the different doors and the stairs so that I could block off rooms. They are light and easy to move around. The one on the stairs has a door stop to keep it up and the others fit right into the door. If you cut them a smidge wider than the door, they bend and hold themselves in place. The lattice is cheap, and one sheet can cover several doors. Just be sure to use the ones with the smaller openings. Good luck! |
