Birds I'm a new member and a new yorkie mom of Henry. I still have a lot to learn. Tell me this.....do all yorkies really dislike birds? I have a fenced in back yard so I take him out there and let him run around. And he spends a lot of time barking and "chasing" birds. Sadly today we found that a baby bird fell into my back yard. :( Henry chased it around. It took a lot for me to get Henry to let it go. Luckily Henry didn't kill it, but now I have to take him out with a harness until the bird can fly. Otherwise I'm not sure what else to do. The other birds were screeching and flying overhead as well since the baby bird was making a lot of noise. |
My two chase birds... I could never own a bird because one of them would kill it. However, I know several members on here own parrots, macaws, cockatiels etc and their dogs like peacefully with them. My grandfather has a parrot and we were getting it out to hold it... and he freaked and flew across the room and landed on the floor. In a split second, Couver was on top of the bird trying to attack it. Both my grandfather and I ran across the room and tripped over things trying to separate the two. Luckily, neither of them were hurt and we were able to separate them without incident. |
This is too funny.......just about 20min ago Phoebe was going nuts over a bird. One was sitting in the door way of hubby's barn and she was doing her best to get out of the house!! |
It is their nature to be little "hunters". AND everything is a game. LOL |
They're terriers!:) Mine chases every bird that dares to land in her yard or on her fence. She learned a cute little thing watching my neighbor's bird dog one year. She'd come over here and dance all around a mugo pine and sit up and try to see if there were any birds in the mugo pine. Funny thing was that Kacee started sitting up trying to see in the mugo pine after that and if there were any birds the chase was on - for a little ways. Kacee is always on a leash outside her yard!:) Tell me they don't imitate and learn from bigger dogs! Another time a baby bird landed on the steps outside the patio doors and I had to go save it. Kacee was having a fit at the doors and I didn't dare let her out there until I got that bird outside of her yard. He wasn't very good at the flying thing yet!:) |
We Have a 31 year old parrot {Rudy} and Louie always tries to instigate play with him, but if he goes into the backyard he will stalk, chase, bark at the birds, and I think he would definitely kill one if caught one:( but with Rudy it's a different story. I believe he knows it's family, and I always tell him Leave rudy alone he's a old old bird:): |
Thanks! Henry does stop under a tree and looks up and barks at the birds too. He is so fast that there is no way that I can let him loose until I'm sure the baby bird is gone. |
Thanks! I was a little bit horrified at first, but I do understand that it's in his nature. |
I have not introduced Mina to the cockatiels yet. Just not ready to chase any of them around the house. |
Birds, squirrels, bunnies, snakes................nothing is safe in our yard. |
Tibbe has a terrier's strong prey drive and chases anything that gets into the yard! Your little guy was just doing what his breed was bred to do. I hope the birdie is going to be okay. |
Being hunters and having a territorial instinct is just the way our little guys are. However, I have some Zeebs (Finch's) caged inside, and both mine pay very little attention to them. They know the difference. |
It's lizards here, Rizzo chases them in the house and the cat finishes them off  If you didn't know, it's pretty gross watching a cat "dance" around the house with a lizard tail hanging out if his mouth! gag! Rizzo is pretty fascinated watching birds, but he usually just barks his little head off when he sees one daring to land in a tree, in his yard!! The nerve of those winged creatures!!! :D |
Calleigh doesn't bother the birds unless they are walking on the ground. Then she will try to catch them. I think she knows they will fly away. She does go crazy with chipmunks and squirrels. I guess it's the natural ratter instinct these dogs have. I saw a program a week a week or so ago [it was a little disturbing because I love all animals] where silky terriers were hunting and killing rats in a barn. I was so amazed at how fast they caught them, killed them, and moved right on to the next one. It seemed to be their job on this particular farm. |
