Different estimates for dental work?
 

Daisy needs dental work. She needs a deep cleaning and a few teeth pulled..breeder never did anything :( Poor girl.
Anyway..I got one estimate from my vet, but now there is no way I can afford it :(

Do you think vets vary in price on something like that?
Does petsmart do anything like that?

You might want to check around. We have one vet here that has a seperate office for nothing more then spay , nueter and dental. She does ONLY these things and nothing else . She does it as a service to the community. It is about 1/2 the cost of regular vets around here :thumbup:

I would price around. My vet took out Chachi and Jewels retained baby teeth when they were spayed/neutered and didnt charge me anything for the teeth pulled.

YES check around - the main thing is them being put under so you want to have complete trust in the vet you choose.... but you can find a better price if you check around - here in Texas for Cheri ...it varied by hundreds when I priced dental work for her baby teeth to be pulled -

My8 year old pom, maya is going in tomorrow for her first ever dental cleaning, teeth pulled and tear duct opening. I never even thought to ask the price. I assumed it wouls be around 200.00? Am i naive

I was quoted $500 by my vet to have my westie's teeth cleaned!!! Ouch!

If you lived here, you could have Paula do it for $15.

I've hinted around but she won't tell me her secret. Gracie had yucky teeth. They were stained and had HORRIBLE build up. I took her to Paula and that afternoon, her teeth were white as snow! And I swear that on my children's lives. There was NO reminants of tarter or yellowing.

Paula use to work at a vet's office and that's where she learned the secret. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to have it passed on to me.

And no, she doesn't put them under...she's a groomer that works out of her home!

You may have to offer to help Paula groom one day. Get the secret and spread it through YT like a wildfire. My Blue Heelers get pigs ears. They keep their teeth snow white. Even my vet was very impressed with their teeth. Maggie---that's another story. She hides her pigs ears all over the house. Good thing that will do :rolleyes:

I'll have to run that by her! ;) LOL!

Feb is National Dental Health Month
 

Many of you might not know that February is National Dental Health for dogs and many vets will offer a discounted rate :D during this month to bring awareness to the many issues tied to dental care for animals.

My suggestion would be for you to call around the different vets and see if they run specials in February. I personally would not use Petsmart because in alot of cases (at least out here) these are very young vets who do not have alot of experience with toy dogs and especially anesthesia.

Since I have 10 dogs who for the most part all need dentals (I budget for 10 but sometimes I get lucky & not everyone needs it) I book them in February. Our normal dental is close to $400.00 which is outrageous.

Another thing I do is try to keep the buildup/tarter down by doing my own scaling of the dogs teeth. You can buy the tool from petedge.com but you have to have the patient of a saint. You can try to do this before but I highly recommend you have a professional do her deep cleaning first and then try and stay on top of the buildup with the tool. After her first deep cleaning then you can start to brush her teeth at least 3 times a week.

Unfortunately this is one of the drawbacks of a Yorkie but if you want your baby to live a good long life you need to take care of their teeth. This is an expense you need to plan on yearly and it is more important to do this than buy them toys or clothing. :(

It never hurts to look around at different prices.. My vet charges 130.00 for toy dogs.. I'm sure it varies with vets though

I am not sure if any of you know this, but my vet recommended Dentatreat for Obie. He said he has recommended it to many Yorkie owners, and he cannot believe how well it eats the tartar and plaque from their teeth. I paid $11.99. It is a natural dentrifice treat made for dogs and cats. You just sprinkle it on the dogs food. My Obie LOVES it!!! It is made by Wysong. Does anyone else use it? Not that it helps with teeth pulling, but great for those pearly white teeth.

No, but they are now. I read your note and quickly read up on the product. I like the company of Wysong - high end more natural food - didn't work with my gang but I like their philosphy. I am always looking for things that can help with dental care and that is safe.
