Practice makes perfect, right? Roxie needed a haircut. Petsmart couldn't take her for 2 weeks, so I decided to cut her myself. I watched a ton of videos, including the ones on here and the one that came with the clippers. She still came out all uneven. One spot on her back is ridiculously short, and no matter how much I tried to even it out, I just made it worse. We have a pet fair to go to tomorrow, and I am actually embarrassed that people are going to see her looking like this. My only saving grace is that her hair grows fast, so hopefully by a week or two from now it won't look so bad. I really want to work on getting this grooming thing down. The $50-$70 at Petsmart every 6-8 weeks is getting to be too much. |
I bet she still looks adorable. I can't afford to have my 4 groomed so I do it myself. If I make a mistake it grows back. And you do get better the longer you do it. |
I know exactly how you feel ! It cost me $100 to take my two to the Groomer. I have a Clipper Kit, and do "touchups" on my own. Mainly, it's a very close cut on their undersides, sort of a "scalp" to allow them to lay down in the cool grass when we walk/jog. I also like to keep their Hair clipped short/back from their butts a little, just so any "debris" won't get lodged there. My two are little Dirt Magnets/Mudbugs, and don't mind wallowing in anything that's wet and cool. I keep their coats short, so a quick rinse with water will get "most" of the dirt and mud off of them, where they can come back into the house, without tracking in too much mess. Even if I were to (personally) give mine a clip two or three times a year, it still wouldn't be enough practice, for me to get good at it. Oh well. :( |

It does take practice, but you'll get there. I use to cut Kaji's coat down once a month. It grows crazy fast. Once it reaches past 3/4 of an inch it starts to matt. I have to keep him nice and short for both of our sanity. Now I have to buy a quality clipper. |
I clipped my foster dog he looked terrible but he grows fast |
You'll get the hang of it, as did I. A cute outfit can cover up anything! :-) |
HA HA   right, on the coverup with an Outfit ! BUT, every time I put something on My Female Becca, My Male Sneakers tries to pull it off of her. Ummm... wonder where he learned that ! :D |
I'd love to learn to clip Teddie myself, I just worry because he is such a wiggle worm. I have been trying to get him use to the sound of a trimmer myself but he wants to attack anything with a whirring sound. (blow dryer, trimmers) I know it takes time to get them used to it, and we still have a ways to go on training. Does anyone have an idea what some of the better dog clippers are? As for your issue, practice does make perfect. I love the idea of your baby wearing an outfit. There is nothing wrong with being frugal...good stuff and good luck!! |
I have had two Pom's both of which I have cut myself with home scissors it took me a good three or four times to perfect it, by now it almost always turns out good. With Tikka I do the same thing for around her rear as right now she's having real loose stool and it gets messy back there. I take the scissors and trim downwards giving it some layer. I haven't cut her whole coat yet though has she's still a puppy at 8 months! I'll post a picture when I do. I cut my own hair too, I see a salon about once a year... because I will ONLY go to one lady that is back home in Iowa... and I'm only there once or twice a year. lol Maybe that's why I don't have a problem cutting the dogs lol. You'll get the hang of it after a good two or three trims! |
it's hair it's gonna grow back, she loves you even if you screw up her hair cut |
I used thinning shears and moustache scissors, I bought clippers but never had reason to use them yet |
I know exactly how you feel! I did a terrible job on my shih tzu Ollie earlier this week. He's never had a short coat, I used to have his groomer keep his hair about 3-4 inches long. But my groomer left and I decided since the weather was getting warmer I'd use the clippers on him.... BIG MISTAKE!!!! His coat is so thick that no matter what I tried it wasn't even. I was embarressed to take him for a walk..... but he really doesnt care what he looks like. And its only hair, it will grow back. And I promised him that I will never make him look silly again:rolleyes: I will NEVER use clippers on Belle. Thankfully she has a thin silky coat so I can handle just a little ear and sani-trim. Live and learn, I guess;) |
Ziva just got her summer cut- I usually use a groomer but my son wanted to use the haircutter I used to use to cut the boys hair, I agreed but only with a 8 guide on it. By the time I was finished I was using a 4 around the legs. Came out great and I saved the $40! |
