I almost poisoned my baby!! In the mornings I usually give Brandi a half of can and put the other half in the refrigerator. Yesterday when i got home from work I noticed the other half of still on the kitchen counter. I forgot to put it in the refrigerator. I had every intention of throwing it away when the phone rang and completely forgot about throwing away the spoiled food. While still on the phone and not paying attention, I went ahead and feed her the spoiled food. Just that fast I got distracted and forgot to throw away the spoiled can and feed her a new can. Well about 30 minutes later, I noticed Brandi doing what I call her "mommy I'm sick dance", she starts pacing non stop and will lick anything and everything excessively. That's how I know when there is something wrong. I suddenly remember about the food and knew that it was the spoiled food that was the problem. I took her outside hoping that it was working through her system and she had to let it out. But instead she went straight for the grass. Whenever Brandi has an upset stomach she will eat grass. It's the only time she does it. About 10 minutes later, she started vomiting. I didn't panicked because I figured she was trying to get the bad food out of her system. The emergency vet and poison control numbers are on speed dial. After vomiting a couple of more times and a good poop she started to settled down. She's fine now and was back to herself this morning. She has been drinking plenty of water and her little tail is just a wagging away. I only gave her a teaspoon to eat this morning and she gobbled that up. I felt so bad for her that instead of doing my normal bedtime routine I just put her in bed with her blanket petting her and watching her to make sure she was okay. I must of apologized to her a thousand times. She still loves me....even though I gave her food poison :D. I absolutely hate it when my furbabies are in any kind of pain or discomfort especially because of something I did or didn't do. |
I think--in my opinion -- dogs tummies are a little stronger then ours. I think you did the right thing in letting her eat the grass and work it out of her system. My guys do the same if they are upset they will eat grass and throw up. I often don't know what upset them - which is more scarier  |
Glad she is ok. It is so easy to get distracted. |
Me too. I would of never been able to forgive myself if something happened to her because of something I did. Thank God, she's back to her normal self. And yes she did forgive me. |
When mine get an upset tummy, they also know to eat grass until they throw up. I dont know where they learn that from. As an asside, when one does it, the other will start to nibble the grass as welll even if the other was not showing any other symptoms of being sick.. strange but they seem to copy each other. We also feed them yogurt with live cultures and I think that helps calm their tummies and replace the bad bacteria in their digetive system. We are on vacation now and they are just really getting used to their new surroundings and people. When Gatsby would not eat all day yesterday, we bought some yogurt and strawberries and fed him that, which got his appetite back and then he ate his kibble eventually. Good luck! |
Glad she is ok, and do not go beating yourself up over it. Surprised it spoiled in 1/2 a day. Heck, in the wild they will tear into meat that has been laying there for a much longer time. |
Scary!! You wouldn't have poisoned her though... poison is things like household cleaners, etc. A bit spoiled dog food will just upset a tummy. Glad she is doing better! |
It's so awful to see our babies sick. Glad she's feeling better. |
I wouldn't feed food left out 1/2 a day on purpose but I have seen mine eat food that had been left in their bowl all day. It never bothered any of them. That is actually a big reason I do not feed canned food -- just kibble! I did not like the idea of them occasionally leaving the food so long. If I had to feed & leave, invariably I would find food still in their bowl hours later when I returned. So much easier with kibble! They do get other things for variety/treats that are healthy and wet to give them some variety. |

I agree...they do eat feces too, pretty much anything they can get to. Meat that's beyond being safe for human consumption won't hurt the average dog. (not saying such things would be good for them, but rarely seems to hurt seriously) Though I don't know what type of food it was I suspect something else made her sick and it's a coincidence that she was fed a can that was left out for a few hours...maybe it's incredibly hot there or something that spoiled food that quickly.??? Odd for sure. |
