Adding a puppy? We currently have a 12 yr old female fixed std poodle. Also have a 10+ mos old neutered male Yorkie. The poodle does not like the yorkie at all. Tolerates him, but stays away whenever possible and won't play with him. We have an opportunity to get a silky/yorkie mix puppy in about 3-5 weeks. We would add a female (spaying of course) for companionship for the yorkie who wants to play ALL the time. Do you think that the two small dogs would bond and get along becoming best friends? Maybe even leaving the bid dog alone? Or am I opening a kettle of worms which will make our household miserable. We have no kids left at home, so it's just me and hubby. We both work, so would give yorkie a playmate during the day too. Poodle will probably not make much more than a year or two more. Thanks for any input :) Sharon |
We tried adding another little girl for Sophie to play with and it went well the first couple of weeks but then the one we added became very aggressive with Sophie and after a couple months of refereeing she went to a new home with my niece and is happy to be the only dog in their household. I think more times than not it works out. I think different sexes might be easier, just guessing. If possible I would suggest a trial meeting with the two before making it permanent right away. I know there are many YT members with multiple dogs that may give you better advice so I'm bumping this up. :) |
Awww the poodle is being a typical senior! She is probably annoyed at the energetic pup and just wants to be left alone. I think the pups will bond and keep each other company. |
You really never know how it is going to work out since it is so dependent on how the individual personalities mesh together. I added a second puppy when my older one was just about to turn two. It took a few weeks for him to get used to sharing me but now they are the best of friends- they play together, sleep together, love each other constantly. I love that they have each other when I am gone during the day. |
I added a female shih tzu when my Suzi (yorkie) was a year old. They have had no problems at all. My vet told me I should have goten a male though, because females sometimes do not get along well. Sense yours is a male, then adding a female would probably work out fine. Maybe you could allow them to meet beforehand, just to make sure they get along well. my brother and sister in law just got anther puppy for the same reason. Their other young dog was lonely, now they are both very happy dogs together. I think it is typical a senior dog would not like a puppy around. That happened to us a long time ago when we brought home a new pom puppy, and our older pom was not happy. |
Thanks for the encouraging responses. I think little Max would benefit from having a "partner" in life. It is someone to chum around with and explore with and play when no one else wants to play. Now to just convince my husband. |
We had fantastic luck introducing Jett into our household. Bella and Jett are now INSEPARABLE!!!! Bella is 1 year old and Jett just turned 6 months old. :D Good luck convincing hubby!! Just be persistant!! LOL |
