My precious yorkie gave birth to five beautiful pups this morning. I'm really concern about three of them, they are rather small about the size of a mouse. When should I take mom and pups to the vet? I would also like to thank everyone for posting all their breeding; puppy watch experiences. Katie had her pups pretty fast at day 61 (28APR11), she started at 0600 and had the last one at 1030.

CONGRATS on 5 pups! I'm guessing you have no postal scale to weigh the puppies since you estimated size by comparing to a mouse. If they are really that small and you are inexperienced, I would call the vet now and ask for their advice. I would want them seen as soon as the vet believes it is safe to transport them. I think you could do that right away but he might want them to be 24 hours old before being moved. They go in on Day 3 for tail docking and dew claw removal so if they are otherwise completely healthy, that would be the day you'd take them in.

It is actually important, especially if these are undersized pups, that you weigh them each day to make sure all are thriving. Do they all seem to be latching on fine and eating well? Can you see their little bellies getting rounded after nursing?

Pups and mom are doing well. I did go out and purchase a scale to weigh them. 3.1 2.75, 2.5, 2.05, 2.4. I called the vet and they said that the size was normal since the the dad weighs 5lbs and the mom 6. I will post pictures soon.

Sounds like great weights. I just would check their weight daily to make sure they are gaining. Enjoy they will grow up so fast.

Glad you got the postal scale! Now you can feel assured they are normal weights for yorkie puppies. They do start out very small! :) I think a little larger than mice but still pretty small.

Every time I "talk" with someone who has a new litter of yorkie pups, I start getting the breeding bug again! I miss having newborns around. They are such a joy! Something seems to change almost daily. Then before you know it they are a month old and then the FUN really begins! They develop individual personalities, fight, play, and love! (SIGH!) Enjoy every minute of it!:D

Just keep weighing those pups and make sure they are all nursing well. Sometimes the stronger ones will push the smaller ones out of the way so the little ones don't get enough. I don't know how experienced your mother dog is but sometimes they just don't notice what is going on. If the pups are not all gaining at the proper rate you may need to get some Esbilac milk replacement and help out by supplementing their diet. A weaker pup can lose very quickly so just keep a close watch on their weight and consult with your vet. Make sure they are staying warm and that they don't get too far away from mom. They cannot maintain their body temp by themselves at this age.If you have a good vet that has experience dealing with breeders hopefully you will do fine. Read as much as you can to get as much information from experienced breeders as you can.

Congrats, I remember holding Harley at two weeks and he was only the size of a hamster (breeder let me visit weekly), he was 4oz at birth. No advice, but just wanted to say I can't wait to see pics I'm sure they are adorable.
