Please Tell Me The Difference Between A Silky & A Cotton Coat I've been trying to figure out what kind of coat Princess has forever, and never used to think to ask the groomer when she went. She goes to the vet next month, so maybe they'll know? I just wondered if there are any traits I can look for or any tricks to finding out which she has. I keep her cut very short in warm weather, and even in the winter I never let it past maybe 4-5" out. It's not a huge deal to me, I love whatever coat it is, but I'm just curious, thanks in advance!:) |
Here is a link I found, hopefully it will help you determine. Hopefully the link even works. I've never copy and pasted one before, so please forgive me if it doesn't. Maybe someone better at it will come along and help. lol http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...rt-thread.html Also, I have read somewhere here about the color in their eyes in a picture. If you take a pic and they have a green or blue eye then a silky coat. A red or amber colored eye, a cotton coat. Hopefully some of this info helps. :) |
I looked at your pic;s..her coat is not soft at any means...runs to silk, but could be a touch coarse..I would have to feel it... |
Cotton coats get matted a lot easier. I believe they are thicker and more coarse, too. |

See i have been wondering the same thing, My baby has much more hair than your princess does, mollys seems a lot thicke, your princess sure looks like a sweetie :) |
Her hair does lay down pretty good, grows very fast & does not seem to break off. When it was longer it tangled around her harness a little bit but that was it. When I trimmed her up this winter I just used scissors, in March I used clippers & got some of the thicker hair off the middle of her back. That hair was pretty coarse, but underneath was sooo soft. We couldn't stop petting her! lol. Correct me if I've interpreted wrong, cuz God knows I could've!:p I'm guessing it's silky with a little coarseness, as was mentioned, could it be that she has grown out of the coarseness now? (she's 15 months). Or will that come and go? It's only on her back, her head, etc. is nice & soft. |
One thing I notice is the difference in the hair on the legs of my 2 silky coated ones compared to the hair on my cottony coated ones. The silky coated ones hair leg seems to start higher up and be long and straight. The cottony coated ones leg hair is thick and grows more all over their legs. Not sure if I am explaining it right. |
