dry skin/hair loss Cooper is 5 months old and is having a problem with hair falling out and dry flaky skin. Changed her food over a week and a half time frame. It's been a week now on Holistic Select for puppies and have used TropiClean puppy shampoo with BioGroom Silk Conditioning Creme Rinse. We are treating him for puppy mange...scraping didn't show the common type and feels we need to rule out the more difficult type of mange that lives in the follicle. If no improvement will see a derm to see about allergy, or possibly alopecia. Hoping changing food will help to flaky skin. Any sugestions would be appreciated! |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Did they rule out yeast and ringworm (common puppy problems). Sarcoptic mange is frequently missed on skin scrapings... aren't the treatments for demodectic mange kind of toxic? Does the vet know for sure that's what it is? Might be easier just to go to the derm vet specialist right away and not wait and see.... let us know... good luck. |
dry skin/hair loss Did rule out ringworm...will inquire about yeast. Call call derm in am! Thanks!! |
Demodex is present on most dogs, it is the puppy's immune system that must fight these off. A healthy immune system does just that, but when the immune system is immature or poorly working the Demodex take over and you see scaly patches with hair loss. Times of stress for an animal can make this worse also. Treament varies and some just get better without treatment. Vets use shampoos to help with the symptoms but most do not get into the follicle where the mange lives. If the Demodex is greater than 5 areas over age of around 7 months and becomes Generalized then they treat with Ivermectin daily or Revolution (I think) daily but the doses are quite high and the treatment is risky. One big sign is around the eyes. There is usually hair loss there with not some much of the dry skin/scaling and the area appears pink in a circular area around them. |

Have you ruled out demodex mites? I had an elderly collie who had a brief bought with them. She just lost hair around her eye and when I put her on a raw diet, it went away. Sometimes it is a hereditary condition, have there been any problems with the parents? I hope you are able to figure out what it is and your baby improves. I would possibly think about a raw diet like Nature's Variety (or even a Prey Model Raw diet) as this can sometimes help these kinds of issues. I would also try adding fish oil to the diet. That may or may not help but it can't hurt. Also, Isle of Dog sells a nice line that is supposed to help with dry skin problems so it might be worth it to try those products for bathing as well. It's a little pricey but a really nice product. |
