Snooze is having some itchy dry skin problems. I have had Snoozels for about 5 weeks now. I have bathed him three times and his skin is white, flakey and he is scratching himself. I am using the puppy shampoo by paul mitchel with the spray/leave in conditioner. What do you all suggest I use to help his skin? Do I need to bathe him more often or less or use something else? Thanks for any help. |
anyone have any suggestions? |
When an animal has skin problems it may be the food you are feeding him. I suggest you find the best natural food (always read labels) and see if things change in a few weeks. You can add some olive oil to the food too, no more than a teaspoon, to help with dry skin and better digestion. Also give him an oatmeal bath...that can help with the itching... Hope that helps a little...and as always...if it doesn't clear up...take him to your vet. :):) |
What kind of food are you feeding him? In regards to shampoo, i haven't tried paul mitchell. I use Pet silk Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner followed by pet silk serum. You can also try paw earth oatmeal shampoo and conditioner but i am not sure how well it will work as i haven't tried it. |
My lil guy also has puppy dander. I've also heard olive oil in the food is good. Regular brushing is also known to help. Bathing three times in 5 weeks might not be such a good idea. I had Bentley's hair cut really short and that also helped a bit because I am allergic to his dander. |

How often should I be bathing him? I thought I should be every other week, should it be less or more? I will look into the Pet Silk shampoo and Cond. and the serum. Where do you buy it? I do brush him daily and I have trimmed his hair a little but he hasnt had a hair cut yet. I bought some clippers this week and plan to cut him when it warms up a little more. He isnt having a ton of flakes but he is itching a little and I can see that his skin is a little dry so what do you all think I need to do? Thank You for any additional help. |
Presto is on wellness puppy super 5 mix, you can also try royal canin for yorkie puppies (presto was allergic to it though) You can buy pet silk from my website if you like Diva Puppy, Pamper Your Friend. |

So do you not recommend the nutro food? I will check out your website for the wash. Thanks. |
i havent tried it to be honest but those two are ones that most breeders recommend. |
I'd try a differnt food, something high in omega 3 fish oil, you can also get an omega 3 suppliment to put on the food (I use and like Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil for my beagle who gets dandruff and dry skin from a thyroid condition). I couldn't find the ingredient list online for Nutro's puppy food, but I'm not a fan of nutro in general. Check out: www.dogfoodadvisor.com/ and www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ You definatly shouldn't have a problem bathing him once every two weeks or even once a week, that's what most of us do, but if his skin is really dry, you do need something really moisturizing and definatly a good conditioner. Make sure you're rinsing very well also. If a better food and good grooming products don't work, talk to your vet:) |

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to keep him on the same food but I am going to find a better conditioner for him. |
My sophie had the same problem when I got her. I've feed her natures recipe since I've brought her home. its all natural and is high in omega 3. they also just came out with a salmon, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin recipe with salmon being the main ingredient. its also DOES NOT contain grain or corn. my vet said its pretty good. I hope this helps with the food part. |
