Morkie and Smoking My boyfriend smokes in the house. How harmful is it for our puppy and 2 cats? |
Ex smoker here....I'd be worried about all 5 of you, but the animals are small so wayyyy more harmful. |
I can imagine. Trying to get him to smoke outside.... |
It's very harmful & I'd make him smoke outside. My DH & I smoke & we NEVER smoke indoors even when it's 15 below 0 at my house. If your baby is not having problems from it now it soon will. |
Second hand smoke is VERY harmful to humans and animals alike. You should have him smoke outside for the health of all the others in the house! |
I too have been concerned about this, and I think your BF should smoke outside, if nothing else than just being polite. However, does anyone know of any Studies which have been conducted on this issue, as it relates to a Dog's exposure to Cigarette Smoke ? (links appreciated) |

I smoke outside, no big deal> but it is one if you are doing it inside where your animals are. |
second hand smoke is worse for dogs and cats because their lungs are so much smaller then ours. Its like smoking around an infant. Also, the smell gets in their coat and its very hard to get out. I groom a couple dogs that come from smoker homes and honestly its disgusting. The poor dogs stink and I've tried everything to get the smell out. They also have a "smokers cough". One of the dogs even as breath that smells like smoke. Dogs can get sick and get lung cancer from second hand smoke, just like people. Ask your BF if he would smoke around an infant, and then tell him that's what he's doing when he smokes around small pets. Even when you smoke outside the smell lingers on your clothes and then you transfer it to your dogs when you pick them up and cuddle with them. Not good. Great articles, thank you, everyone! |
My friend and I used to smoke in the house all the time. Finally when one of my cats came down really hard with asthma we stopped smoking in our home. My vet says the worst thing you can do to your pets is smoke near them. We have a number of pets and now I feel so guilty that we didn't stop before this. It took my Olivia to give us a wake up call. Now we smoke outside only. Hopefully we will be able to cut out smoking completly. |
I agree tell him to go outside, or maybe in the garage? I don't know how you are able to deal with him, just the smallest amount of 2nd hand smoke around me and I instantly get a headache. I can't be around it for a second :( |
I also agree with trying to get him to smoke outside.....with cats and smoking, if they are older, they are more prone to getting sick, and same thing with puppies..... |
I'm a smoker but have always smoked outside no matter the weather. Before Andy it was for my parrot. Now it is for the parrot and Andy. Thier lungs are so small it's like blowing smoke in a babies face. But that's an other issue. |
