yorkie being spayed? I own a female yorkshire terrier shes 8.5 months and weighs 3.0lbs. I feel a lil bit scared/stressed out, because I dont know if she should be spayed or not. She is schedule for this tuesday 4-26-2011. Shes going to be spayed and have some of her teeth extracted the same day. But what worries me is the spaying surgery, shes too tiny. Should she be spayed or not? |
Assuming that your vet follows a safe anesthetic protocol, has spayed small dogs before, and has done preop bloodwork, then yes, it is generally recommended (for their health). |
I have a chihuahua, Bitsy, that is 2 3/4 lbs. and a Yorkie, Brooke, that is 3 1/4 lbs. and I worried when both of them got spayed!! It is normal to be worried. Make sure that your vet has done tiny dogs or kittens before. My vet said, "Nanci, I spay rats, I think I can spay your dogs!!" That made me feel better. She only made about a 5/8"-3/4" cut and used her finger to loop the fallopian tubes and bring out the sex organs. I watched the surgery with both of my girls and Bitsy had a benign cyst growing on her ovary, which was the size of a grape. It was a good thing she was spayed. Make sure they are using Isoflorane gas, which is a bit more expensive but usually a vets first choice now. I wish you good luck with your baby, believe me it is harder on us that it is on them!! |
Lulu was just over 3 lbs when she was spayed at 8 months old. Please do the pre-op bloodwork. It's very important! If that is normal & your vet is experienced everything should be fine. You might want to visit the health forum and read up on the anesthesia protocol. |
Gigi, Trust me, I know EXACTLY how you feel ! But, after that, your next problem is making sure that the don't's, don't become do's. |
If you not sure, you could delay her spay for a month or two, maybe she'll get a bit bigger... (as long as you can keep her safe if she comes in heat) |
Pablo weighs 2.5 lbs soak and wet and had no trouble with his neutering and dental. My vet say's its harder with large dogs than small. Small dogs can come out of anesthesia quicker than large dogs. Dont worry, as suggested make sure you have the blood work done. |
Just checking, did you go thru with the spay? |
