Another Win for BYB's pug-beagle-love-puggle-wsj: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance An excerpt that made me puke a little in my mouth: "For the most part, designer dogs are not hard to breed. Ms. Miller says she simply puts the two dogs together when the female is fertile. The animal's size can sometimes make things a bit tricky. Ms. Miller has one yorkie male that is only 2½ pounds -- too small for some of her larger females -- so she has used artificial insemination to breed that dog. When hybrids are bred with other hybrids, some breeders continue to tout their lineage, but they are not currently recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club." And another: "To reduce health risks, Ms. Miller, the Missouri breeder, has the parents of her dogs genetically tested to ensure they don't carry liver disease or have retinal dysplasia, two ailments that can occur in Yorkshire terriers and shih tzus. The cost of the tests, along with other expenses, brings the price of her shorkie tzus to $1,600 each." That's more than I paid for my yorkie with registration (limited). :thumbdown:thumbdown BYB's, Greeders, and those "go between" people must love this article, and will probably link it on their websites, "see, hybrids are better than purebreds, and what we're doing is GREAT!!!". :doh34: |

Yes, and with those thousands of dollars they're lining the pockets of people who profit off poor dogs backs. These people are buying dogs "site-unseen" and without any REAL knowledge of the parents of the puppy. They're just told that the "breeder" tested the parents and both parents are purebred, and they believe them and shell out almost $2k for a mutt that they could easily find at a shelter for the nice low price of about $40 maybe more depending on the area and what kind of shelter it is... |
Rosemary Traettino of Ocean Township, N.J., has a Yorkshire terrier, that is now 14 years old and also weighs 14 pounds -- much larger than the typical yorkie. But she wanted to be sure her second dog was smaller. Plus, she fell in love with the calm personality of her neighbor's shih tzu. "I said, 'Gee if I could get a yorkie with the personality of a shih tzu, that would be perfect,'" she says. This irritates me!!! My friend has 3 shih tzus who crazy hyper, and bark non stop when they quit snorting long enough. Now i do love them they are the cutest little things but i do believe from what i have seen my yorkie and others around are much calmer then they seem to be, and love people and attention, and yes there are some that are bigger than others *just like ppl they can come in all dif. sizes* but shih tzus seem to be larger so her reasoning for wanting this mixed breed just doesnt make since to me. ALSO, messing with genetics doesnt always get you the best traits of both dogs, you can get the worst traits as well so i really dont see the purpose in this. Then selling them for so much money, because they came from pure pred parents but its not purebred techinically, you dont know what can happen when crossing genes, the possibilities are endless, this just disgusts me. SORRY HAD TO GET MY RANTING OUT, THIS TOPIC ALWAYS IRRITATES ME. ___ |
Saw a show about that topic on the ABC Evening News yesterday. Awful! |
When I was browsing petfinder & other rescue sites last night I came across a ton of "designer" dogs that it looked like were either mill rescues or confiscated from a byb, all in the same town. It's just sad, regardless of the breed, that people just want to pump pups out left & right so they can plump out their pockets!:thumbdown |

UGH! "Designer Dogs" are not healthier than pure bred dogs. These people are nuts for thinking that way. I worked with someone who rescued a "Puggle", and two weeks later he had been diagnosed with liver shunt and was at Cornell getting surgery to save his life!!!! As for Shorkies, I have both a Shih Tzu and a Yorkie and they are each perfect the just way they are! Why combine the two breeds? There is no guarantee what the personality will be or what they will look like when they grow up. Like someone else said, if you want a mix, go to a shelter and save a life! |
My best friend has a designer dog she is chiweenie (chihuahua dachshund) we paid 35 dollars for her fully vetted and spayed. she is a amazing dog. she was on her to the pound because she "was too clingy" what is wrong with people who are breeding these dogs |
