Pack n Play We are getting our new baby in about 4 weeks and I am trying to prepare for her. A friend of mine suggested using a pack n play to keep her contained due to her size. She is measuring really small right now and the breeder is already keeping her longer than she had originally planned. Bri was small when we brought her home and she HATED a crate. She cried for hours inside that thing. I eventually caved and just took her outside all the time to potty. Within a few weeks, she was potty trained and hasn't had an accident since. I am not thinking we will be lucky this time around. So my question is, do any of you use a pack n play for your babies? I was thinking of putting her bed, a potty pad, and some food inside of one and letting it be her place. Thoughts? |
Ya know, I was considering this myself, so I'm interested to see what responces you get. I still have my son's pack n play that I won't ever need again and since Alice is on the small side, I was wondering if that would work instead of buying a dog one. It's surely big enough for a tiny dog, but idk if it would work well? |

I have used a pack and play for both my babies infact Bo still uses it at night to sleep in. He is just four months old. I like having him in my bedroom close to me and with the other dogs. It works out great for us. |

1 Attachment(s) Welcome to YT...and can't wait to see pic's of your new baby when you get her.:)...While a pack n play is fine for the first few weeks you have your baby...just keep in mind and Yorkies do and will climb out of a x pen or pack n play...and could get hurt on the way out...I use a doggy play yard...it has a floor in it for just incase they do have an accident and a top that zips up to keep those little climbs in....They come in alot of sizes...I have 2 a small 44x24 and a large 57x36...I love them...You order them online I got mine from Ebay. |
I agree an X-pen is a great idea. I never crated presto, but he was always in his X-Pen where his food, bed and pee pee pad were. Now he's fully trained to go on the pad :) and has the reign of the whole house! |
 I have a Pack N play thanks to Viv for giving me the great Idea! Dh picked it up for me at walmart, it has little monkeys on it, like a jungle theme! I believe it was 70$. (It isnt a "pet" one, its a human kid one.) Peanut loves it. Even when we are home he will want to go in there. I put some toys, little food and water. |
We used a pac n play for the first 5 months or so, then granduated to an xpen, then graduated to free run!! Our current baby yorkie has a pac n play as well....although right now he stays with his momma in an xpen when were are gone....when home, he free runs too. But, when momma goes home, we will start putting him in the pac n play during the day! Just do be careful...although our older yorkie never climbed his, Ive read that many do, and can fall to the floor and get hurt! Thats a long fall for a tiny baby! |
Thanks everyone. We would never leave her in the pen without supervision, but it is good to think about her climbing out. Bri is too chicken to do anything like that, so I guess I wasn't even thinking! As far as an X-pen goes, do they take up a lot of room? I'd love something that I could keep in the living room during the day and maybe our room at night. That is why I was hoping for a pack n play. Would an x-pen have to be kept in one certain place? |

This is how we trained our older yorkie....after he consistently went back to his pen to potty, we began leaving the gate open at all times when we were gone...we he did good with that, we eventually took it down, but kept his potty pad in the same place! Thankfully, we kept it, because it just went back up for the new pup!! |

I just use the Graco one. I had to put a gate on top when Sophie was young. She was a climber. |
I think they are fine for short periods of time but I don't like them for longer periods. I don't think it is good for the dogs joints & muscle tone to be suspended above ground like the pack and play has them. I think it is far better to use a pet ex-where they are actually walking on the ground. |
We use a pack and play for Izzy.. It's her "crate".. She only sleeps at night in it and when we her gone..( Most of the time Hubby or I are home ) She LOVES it.. We even took it on Vacation with us and it worked out great!!... Just be carefull withusing it from the beginning.. It may be too big at first and you would not want your baby to start using a conner and his own potty area :thumbdown |
