Royal Canin= itchy?? Ok yet another question from good ole me..lol..I have had Foxy a little over a month or so now, she has been on Royal Canin for Yorkies since I have had her( i know not the greatest food..but it seemed to work), but in the last week she seems so itchy. Not tearing her hair out or anything, just itchy. No fleas, etc. Could this be from the food? We go back to the vet on the 28th, so if there is no relief by then Im going to talk to her and see what she says. Thanks. Oh and I forgot to mention she has some eye booger issues going on , so this is why I am thinking its the food??? |

If her itching is uncontrollable I'd get her into the vets for meds; until you get the itching under control. it could be the chicken or the grains with Royal Canin, you may have to switch to a grain free food. |
It sounds like it could be the food. I know it has corn gluten meal in it and a lot of dogs are allergic to that.... ?? I switched Riley to the Royal Canin/Yorkie Puppy after I brought him home from the breeder. I then switched him over to orijen puppy, which I found to be a little too rich for his system, so I switched him over to Acana.... which I Love. Right now I am feeding him RAW in the mornings and the Acana kibble, at night. He is thriving!! It took months, but I finally found something that he and I are both happy with. :) Good Luck! It can be soooooooo Frustrating. |
I had to switch my chachi off the royal canin because of itching. It has corn in it and some dogs have allergies to it and some dont |
Hi Kelly Presto was itching on Royal Canin for Yorkies as well :( anyhow i tried blue buffalo and it didn't work either. Now he's on wellness and it works great for him! |
Fromm's Worked for Bella Hi, Bella had the same problem with any food that had "grain" in it. She is now on "Fromm's" no grain food. She doesn't itch anymore. It's earned the highest rating for dog food on the rating scale. You find it at specialty pet stores. Good Luck! |
Rizzo was itchy on RC as well, once I switched him to Wellness the problem stopped. No more eye boogies either! |
For those of you recommending the Wellness, which flavor or bag is it that you use? Thanks! |
I mean to add, that she does have those bad teeth, so we need something with smaller kibble. Thanks. |
The pollen count has been terrible here in NC. I'd suspect that is what is causing the itching, especially since she has eye boogers also. Environmental allergies are far more common than food allergies. If I recall, food allergies only make up about 10 or 20% of canine allergies. Food allergies occur after repeated exposure to an ingredient over a long period of time so they are even less common in a puppy. You've only had her a month, right? |

Yes I have had her about a month now, maybe a little longer. She is 5 years old, and yes the pollen is terrible, hadnt even thought about that... |
Presto is on Wellness Super 5 Mix Just for Puppy. The kibble is same size as the RC for yorkie puppies. |
I did the Wellness Super-5 Small Breed, but have since switched to Blue Buffalo Wilderness (Chicken I think) because Rizz got bored with the Wellness. |
ZoE has been on RC since the second day I brought her home. Her vet recommended RC Minidog and then we changed to RC yorkshire terrier puppy. She has no itching issues, has a really nice coat and hardly ever gets eye boogers. And, best of all she loves it and has no eating problems. RC is all she gets other than tiny pieces of carrot, apple, peas & green beans as training treats and an occasional smearing of peanut butter in her kong. |

RC has made a lot of Yorkies itchy, butif it is a sudden thing around this time ofyear in the south, my guess would be environmental. Antihistamines don't always work for environmental allergies in dogs, but they are usually worth a try. You could call the vet and see if they thought you should be using one. They need to be given for a bare minimum of ten days ot see if there is any relief. So if you called now and started one, then by the appt. on the 285h you would have a little bit of an idea if it was working or not... It wouldn't hurt to do an elimination diet though. |
Awesome, thanks everyone. My mind just went directly to a food issue, hadnt even thought about environmental allergies. |

I didn't realize Foxy was was five so it could be food allergies, but I'd still suspect environmental allergies. The pollen count in NC has been really high lately. |
Hi Katie, I know your post is from waaay back, but my little guy is having the same issues..he itches all over after his meals and has a lot of eye boogers..what food did you eventually end up feeding Foxy? |
dog food I use wellness complete balance chicken and oatmeal. If you have a senior dog check to see about a low fat food. |
Thank you!! Yogi is only 5 months so I'll check if they have a puppy version..did the itching and boogers clear up on this food? |

My older boy started itching badly all of a sudden and after a lot of time and research I realized it was due to the grain and chicken in the dog food. Go figure... He ate chicken for years!! So we do the limited ingredient, grain free, dry food for small breeds from wellness. I mix with a little ground beef ( cooked and lean) and either some reg boiled or sweet potatoes. He had a dental and had 7 teeth pulled ( he's 13) so I add hot water to moisten the kibble. He used to get chicken broth but we had to obviously eliminate that. It takes a while ( 2 weeks) but the itching completely stops! Both are common allergies in dogs and both cause bad itching. I have to check all the ingredients in certain things bc a lot of foods have some kind of poultry ingredient or grain. The worst is wheat or brown rice. |
