Help my puppy things I am a chew toy Hi Annabelle is a loving puppy to every one but with me she thinks I am a chew toy. She is with me every day at work and at home. Could this be her trying to be the alfa with me? Or does she not except me in her pack ? Thanks |
How old is she? Most puppies go through a very "mouthy" stage. If they are taken from their mother's too early, it makes the stage even worse. |
Try replacing your hands with a healthy chew toy, like a stuffed Kong, a bully stick, trachea chew, etc. Mine went through this too. |
We dont know anything about her back ground They say she was 10 weeks when we got her and she is now 13 weeks. She has lots of diffrent types of toys but still chooses me to nibble on (lol) I put a different toy in her mouth when she starts to nip me but nothing works She will chew her toys when she wants but has to do so leaning on me or sitting close to me under my chair. |
Lucy does the same thing to me, if she's not chewing on me she's licking me. we have lots of chew toys, bully sticks.I guess there's nothing like the taste of mommy's skins :) We enrolled her in obedience class which starts May 14. Hopefully being around other puppy bites she’ll stop. |
Try this: As soon as her mouth touches you and you feel a bit of teeth there, say in your deepest loud voice "ouch!", rather than pulling your hand away (which makes it a fun play toy), let them decide that "ouch" means you bit me... and that's bad... The idea of the deep loud voice is to startle them away from you, then the second there is a release reward with a proper toy (this technique comes from My Smart Puppy, a great book for puppy owners). It's kinda cute how it ended up working with Harley, for some reason every time we'd say ouch, he'd stop, lick me then take the new toy... now if I feel his teeth ever, he always kisses it better. :p |
Thanks I will try that way I have tryed the high pitch yelp but she just yap at me then do it again lol So now I will try the deep voice and see what happens thank you |
My pup was "bitey" when I first brought her home too. She is better now although she likes to play and I am her favorite toy! lol! She does like to chew on my fingers and usually she is pretty gentle about it. If she does get too hard, I take my hand away and say OUCH!!! I give her nylabone toys and she really likes them! Good luck!! |
I am going through the same thing with Riley. He is about 11wks. I have just been saying no bite in a firm voice everytime and making sure I have something that is ok to chew on nearby so I can immediately put it in his mouth. He seems like he is starting to get the message. It will just take time :) |
Pup needs to learn bite inhibition. When I got Teddie at 12 weeks he had to learn it. He would gnaw and bite some, and I taught him not to do it by saying "OUCH!" I also taught him "niiiiice" so he knows how to be gentle when he is playing with a toy that is in my hand. It's a normal issue that all pups go through, whether it is us or other animals they learn through how you react to it. Good luck!! |
