Biting and stage fright! What's up with Elvis' behavior?! I'm confused about a couple of things and perhaps the more experienced owners can help. First off, Elvis loves to play bite. At least I think he's play biting... Sometimes he just slowly bites on my fingers and I move them away and say "no!". Other times he lunges towards them like he's on the prowl and lets out a slight growl as he's doing it. Is he trying to bite me for real?? Second, he doesn't mind being in his crate when he's in it, but when I open the gate for him to come out, he hesitates. He'll come out a bit as I call him, then when I put out my hands for me to pick him up, he goes back in like he has stage fright or something. Though when a stranger does it, he comes out! What is the deal?? Please help! Thanks, Nick |
Hi:D How old is Elvis? If he's still a young puppy the biting your fingers is just playing, but you are right for discouraging it. Just tell him "no" like you've been doing, but then give him a toy to chew on and play with instead. Even the little growl when he goes for your fingers is just playing if he's a puppy, that's how he played with his littermates:D. As far as coming out of the crate, Alice doesn't like to be "taken" out of her crate that she sleeps in at night either. The first week or so I had her, she wouldn't walk out of it either, I had to reach in and get her, but now I just open the door and out she comes:) Idk why he comes out for strangers, maybe he's just more curious of them. Try using a small treat to get him to come out on his own, he should get over that soon:D |
2 Attachment(s) He's teething, and for the next few months, until he gets all his adult teeth, he's going to want to bite everything. Most people say, to say "no" and hand them a suitable chewing toy. Joey loved those puppy chewing toys and anything with rings, he'd chew on them for hours. You second problem is very common, don't forget, a dog sees your hand as it would a mouth, and so it looks like a large mouth coming at it. This is why it's important to never cause any pain to your pup with your hands; they should learn that good things come from the hands. Cheerios are a great little treat that can help in learning hands are good things, they are tiny enough for a yorkie, and don't interfere as much with their appetite as more substantial treats would. |
:) Dex is 7 mo...he WAS doing the same thing as far a "play" biting up till Tuesday...IDK, Maybe it's just me :rolleyes:but on Tue he went to the vet for neuter, chipping and had his last 2 baby teeth removed. He hasn't been biting at my fingers these past few day:rolleyes::cool: Was he trying to "bite" at my figers to get those last two teeth out or what??? Watch tonight I'll go home and he'll start up  |
Elvis is 12 weeks old in case that helps. |

Oh, ya, he's definatly just teething and "play" nipping. Flexable Nylabones are great for when they're that young, bully sticks, Kong toys etc. You can use plush toys with dogs this small too, just make sure he's always supervized with it and throw it out if it shows any signs of destruction (loose threads, holes etc.). Sounds like he just wants to chew on something (like a baby with a teething ring) and for you to play with him:) |
E8, Don't worry about his biting, he's using the only 'hand" he knows he has. The actual mouth contact should reduce, when he learns he can use his paws to hold on to play. That doesn't mean that he'll completely stop that behavior, It's a fine line he must learn. Understanding that he can hurt you with his teeth, and your prompting with a "NO", should moderate the intensity of his bite. I think that an attempt to eliminate this activity, will not promote a connection with you. So, allow him to do it, just keep it under control. It's just his way of holding on to you, which is good. HA, when My Female Becca does this (she's still young) I growl at her ! She immediately backs off, and licks the spot where she was biting me. I think it's her way of apologizing, for playing too hard. :D |
