Completely new with a few questions We just brought home our new yorkie last night :) She's 9 weeks. I have a few questions: 1. What brand/kind of treats should I buy for training? 2. What do I do about flea/tick preventative? Is there a spray? How do I do that? 3. Is it normal for a female puppy to pee and get it all over her feet? 4. It looks like she might need her hair trimmed around her bottom/tail to be "cleaner" after potty. Can I trim with scissors or should a professional do that? Thanks for helping this nervous new mommy! |
Hi! Congrats on your new baby and Welcome to YT! For training I either use pieces of her kibble or Bil-Jac small dog training treats that I break into smaller pieces (they are soft treats). I also just recently started using Natural Balance treat - it looks like a wrapped sausage- you can purchase them at Petco. I would ask your Vet to rec a good flea preventative. There are topical and oral medications. Don't use a spray on your puppy. I've never noticed any of my female dogs peeing and getting it on their feet, so I have no advice for you there. And finally trimming her so that she's cleaner after pottying is definately something you can do at home as long as you feel comfortable doing it :) |
Hello and welcome to YT :) For treats i would recommend zukes little bites! for the flea tick, i would def ask the vet since she is a baby he might try and stay away from it. I don't like to give meds to presto unless i have to. About female puppy peeing and getting it on herself might be due to nervousness. Try to see if it keeps happening, i would def ask the vet about it also. In regards to trimming, i personally wouldn't do it as it will be too messy :) but if you feel comfortable def clean it up! Good luck on your new adventure. Also make sure you get her started with a good grooming regimen ;) |

Love your choice of words! LOL! OP - for treats, I actually used the real tiny goldfishes or sometimes cheerios. She loved them and worked great for training purposes. Baby wipes come in handy quite a lot. Keep them on hand. |

Hi and welcome:D I agree with the other posters that you should talk to your vet about what flea preventative to use. I personaly use Frontline Plus. Just make sure you don't use any cheap brands like Hartz, they can cause big problems and don't really work anyway. Treats - anything natural. Just like Presto recommended, my dogs LOVE Zukes brand (especially the peanut butter and blueberry mini bakes:)) and for Alice's "training sessions" I use their mini natural peanut butter flavor because they're really tiny and soft so it can easily break them into even tinier pieces. Just stay away from anything you'd find in the grocery store:p. Browse the "natural foods section" at your Petco or if you have a small privatly owned good pet store. Mardelin gave good advice for the bathroom area hair (love your wording too - "ornaments" hahaha). Congrats on your new "baby", you'll love Yorkie Talk :) |
Love the new word of the day...Ornaments! cute. When my pup was going for her routine shots since I brought her home from my breeder, I always had the vet tech give her a quick bottom area shave and nail trim on our way out. I think I'll try the bath oil treatment. Thanks for the advice. |
For training treats, we used Zuke's Mini Naturals. They are small, soft and chewy, and make great training treats. We got the chicken ones most of the time but tried others also, including the salmon ones. My dogs like chicken flavor treats and foods, so we stick to those most of the time. When we didn't have any Zuke's, we would use plain Cheerios. They work too, but the Zuke's are more tempting for the pups. For food, we used Nature's Variety Prairie chicken and brown rice. The kibble is small and easy for them to eat, and it's an all life stages food so we could feed it to all our dogs. Yes, every once in awhile you have to do a little trimming in the sanitary areas. That is unless you want to take them to the groomer frequently. I can tell you about my first experiences, but I will spare you the details. Just keep them trimmed and you'll be fine. Cleaning after the fact is no fun. |

Charlie is a boy but still squats to pee, and he always manages to soak it up in his feet. I just bathe him every couple of days so he doesn't smell. |
