if you didn't want all of this you should never have taken that poor baby into your home. rescuing a dog isn't always easy or cheap and it's always always a lot of learning and hard work to rehab them from whatever s**t their previous owners put them through. if you cannot take care of her and make her skin problems treated then you really should get her back to the rescue so they can find her a better suited home that is willing to put in the money, time and work for caring and treating her. it's not her fault she smells and it's not fair to her for you to have brought her into your life if you don't have the time and energy to give her all your love and care.

I totally agree with this post. When you first rescued her , nobody said anything about her having any skin problems? I don't think these things just happen overnight, but it is a gradual process, which just becomes worse and worse if not treated properly. i understand that you wanted a healthy pet to love a snuggle up with, but whe we take on the responsibility of a dog , it is suppose to be for the good, bad , and ugly. it's a huge responsibilty, especially when they are ill. These are the times when our precious pets need us the most.
Take her to the Dermo. so she can be properly diagnosed and recieve the care and treatment she needs in order to become well. The smell is from the infection she has on her skin. It will not go away until she is treated for it the right way.
She sounds like she is suffering right now, and perhaps hurting too. I hope you don't give up on her.

12/10/2010 We've been seeing Dr. Boord here for about 3 years now. She is wonderful. Our frenchie has had the skin issues typical of his breed for most of his life. He would get bacterial skin infections several times a year, more and more frequently as he got older, & is also highly flea allergic as we found out after moving close to the beach where they thrive. The flea bites sent him into a severe downward spiral so that our regular vet finally said, you need to see a specialist and recommended Dr. Boord.

I was a bit skeptical at first, having already spent so much money with little results at our regular vet. The per visit fees/medicines are slightly more expensive than our normal vet, but in the long run, going here has actually saved us money. On the first visit Dr. Boord was able to pinpoint why the previous treatment had not worked (wrong abx for the specific bacteria causing the infections) and improvement was pretty immediate. Over the next few months we figured out a medication regimen that has kept our dog's allergies and skin infections under good control for the past 2 years, which means we only need to go in twice a year for checkups and to reevaluate the plan, and the occasional visit to our regular vet.

Dr. Boord is very knowledgeable and takes the conservative route with medicines which I like. But she is not averse to trying different things to make sure that your pet is getting the best & most effective treatment possible. I also like all of the nurses here. They're always friendly and acocommodating.

In all I'm very very happy with the treatment Henri has received here. His quality of life has improved dramatically as he is now almost completely itch free, which means I worry about him less and enjoy having him around more.

4/16/2008 This is where to take your dog if you want to be assured it will receive the best care possible. The doctors listen, they are thorough, and you will know that everything possible is being considered regarding your pet's health.

We got bad news from them last week about our best friend, and the doctor was straightforward with it, and everyone was very nice and made us as comfortable as they could.

Over the years, the care from Animal Dermatology Clinic improved our dog's quality of life immeasurably and I recommend this place if you want the best.

2/22/2008 Dr. Boord is wonderful! Our dachshund had some problems with her ears and after 8 weeks and $$ our normal vet couldn't diagnose the problem. A friend told us we should see a dermatologist...I said "WHAT??...didn't know there were dermatologists for dogs"!! Anyway off we went to Dr. Boord who quickly diagnosed the problem and gave us a plan of attack. I really like that she takes the conservative route!

Absolutely. Hopefully, the baby will get lucky next time with someone that knows 'care giving' is a must with any living being (even plants need care). I pray this little girl gets lucky, at least once...it's time :(

I have had her on grainfree food, very expensive for two months now. Also the herbal drops and shampoo at a $ figure that I have never spent in my life for our hair. This has been two months, do you think that it should take a longer period of time and what experience have you had in this area.

I have seen many smelly skin infection dogs and i know that you cannot expect them to be cured in such a small amount of time, especially since you don't even know what's wrong with her.

Food allergy trials are done over MONTHS not days or weeks. You have to pick a good food and stick with it for at least 3 months to ensure the results you are getting are from the food you are currently feeding and not crap that is left in her system from previous foods. To ensure you get correct results with a food trial you need to be giving her that specific food ONLY. no treats, no people food, no other dog food, basically nothing goes in her mouth but that food unless its a medication that the vet told you to give.

Medicated baths, antibiotics, ear meds, etc.... all take time to work. You are jumping all over the place with things to try to get rid of the smell but you are not seriously treating the problem.

I'm not surprised nothing you have done has worked yet. You aren't giving it a chance. You have to do one thing at a time so you can determine what is causing the problem and what fixes it. Giving a bunch of treatments at the same time or one right after the other will not help.

Take the poor dog to a dermatologist asap and follow their directions to a T.[/QUOTE]

OP you sound very frustrated. Sorry! If you have exhausted all your options then why not try the dermatologist. You never know, it may work. Listen.......... this may get you the cuddler you want.

I hope you give it a try.

When I rescued a yorkie he smelled very bad as well. It was horrible. I would give him a bath and within hours he would smell again. I found out he had rotting teeth and the infection was seeping out of his pours. I had his teeth cleaned and pulled and that helped alot .He also had a condition that he lost all of his hair on his mid section. He only had hair on his legs anf his face. I then put him on a raw diet and slowly I noticed his smell was gone. He also started to grow peach fuzz on his back and belly. It is just a thought. A dermo Dr would be a great place to start thou. Good luck.

Taryn0405 04-13-2011 07:39 PM

First of all grain free food doesn't have to be expensive. Gizmo is on grain free food and for a 3.5 lb bag, which lasts him awhile, it's $10.95. Besides, skin allergies or not, I would highly recommend grain free in general.

With that being said, there's not much else you can do tonight. But, that doesn't mean you can't be proactive. The members in this thread have provided alot of information, one even basically mapped out a Vet Dermatologist for you.

So to say we're not helping you is a fallacy. However, we may not be providing you with a fix it now solution which may be what you want to hear right now due to your frustration.

I read your blog and it says that you had her anal glands squeezed. Now, my Cairn, she will get this odor and I can't even describe it and it's terrible. It's almost has like a sweet smell to it. And I know it's her anal glands because she only gets it when she's nervous, anxious, or about to go outside and express them. When she gets out of the stressful situation, the odor goes away.

With that being said, your pup is a rescue and could be doing the same thing. Especially since she's in new surroundings. Now, I'm not a vet, or a vet dermatologist, however I am providing you with some information that you could mention to the dermatologist if you plan on going (and I hope to Jesus that you do).

Remember, that the little face and bat ears that is lovingly staring up at you isn't malicious or purposefully trying to be stinky. Imagine her thought process, she's stinky, her Momma is upset and she knows it, and there's nothing she can do about it. Dogs sense your frustration which probably doesn't help her state at all.

Please listen to our advice, even if it's not the exact thing you want to hear, it's good solid advice and could provide you the answers you've been looking for on here.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for your sweet reply. I am in no way angry, frustrated is the word. I have tried sooo many things and nothing seems to be working. I am not taking it out on my sweet little dog, but more in desperation I am trying to help her, so I am reaching out for help. If I wanted to be ridiculed or accused of abuse I could go to a different site I'm sure. So thanks and I will get her to the dermatologist and see if that works.

prayers and wishing you the best of luck at the dermatologist. the reason that i personally got upset with you was the fact that in your posts you just kept repeating yourself over and over and over about the grain free and shampoo and didn't seem to want to listen to us about the dermatologist. also you acted like you didn't realize or think that you should have to care for your pet but just get the perks of a cuddle buddy.

if you want a care free cuddle buddy get a stuffed animal. dogs are living beings and cannot care for themselves, they rely on us just like human babies do for care and love and health and feeding. so if that's not what you signed up for then you got the wrong kind of pet. if you do love your dog then take her to the specialists and follow through with their advice and treatments until she is finally well and no longer stinky.

either way i wish you the best and good luck

Your frustration is understandable. When something is wrong with my babies, I am racked with anxiety and I just want it fixed because I don't want them to suffer...and I hate worrying. I have deep respect for so many people on YT who have seen their pups through agonizing problems, some of them life-long conditions.

I believe you and your little girl will find much relief at a dermatologist. Sending best wishes. Keep us updated.

Belladonna1 04-14-2011 04:41 AM

So 1st let me say the bad: When we get pets they should be treated as family/children, we dont just give them away when theres a problem with them we cant seem to fix, As youve stated youve tried EVERYTHING! But have you really? Its been almost three months.. Your love as been walking around with this problem. It seems your trying everything that may be the easiest ,fastest and cheapest way, As I belive you have not took her to the dermoatologist as suggested to you since Feb, over 25 times here, because its costly. Now the understanding: I do understand how having a problem with a pet can be frustrating and over whelming at times, As I have two yorkies who have itchy problems and scartch alot and threw trail and error and almost a year, Ive found the problem. But it took at lot of time, patience, and understanding, Now it sounds to me your baby has an INFECTION.... That will not go away untill you treat it, It may be dermadex manage or a rotten tooth, As you stated shes three years old and a rescue, shes probley never had dental work done and may have a bad tooth, witch will cause an ulful smell. You may have came to YT for support, but how can we memebers support you, when you ask for advise we give it to you, yet you dont do it, What do you want? For one of us to tell you excatly whats wrong with her and the treatment: No one can do this on line, As we cant see her.We have also had a memeber do the work for you and gave you many names of places to take her. So whats the problem? You baby right now sits in a coner alone suffering without comfert or love, hugs, kisses, because she smells so bad you wont do so. Shes the one who needs the support. I can only hope if you do give her up because you dont want to realy get to the issue at hand that she find a loving home and owner that will fix her problem.Next time you want something to just hug and not be a caregiver to... get a teddy bear, But all pets NEED A CAREGIVER!!!

jencar98 04-14-2011 05:36 AM

You mention this is a rescue girl, was she used as a breeder in a kennel? Or did she come from a kennel type facility? I realize with the red, itchy skin your girl has a skin condition that needs to be treated but, I do have another idea about her smell. I call it "kennel scent".

I've had numerous foster rescues from breeder situations and all of them have had a bad odor.....in fact every female I've ever got from breeders have the same bad odor and it lasts for months, regardless of what shampoo, conditioner, cologne, etc I've used. It's as if, living in those kennels makes some bad odor permeate their skin. I've also noticed the scent on dogs I've picked up at shelters too. I think the longer the dog has lived in the kennel, the longer it takes to get rid of the odor.

Sophie Kate has been with me for about a year and I've noticed the past 6 months, the odor is finally gone.

Good luck with your girl. Definitely have her seen by a dermatologist but the odor she has (if she was a former kennel dog) may just take time to get rid of, try to be patient.

Great new insight to the problem. Good to see that people have new angles on the situation.

You are just referring to the smell though right? The itching should still be looked at by a specialist? I hope the derm vet can help!

Just thought I would clarify for the OP (and me!). :)

katienme2002 04-14-2011 07:10 AM

Have you checked her teeth? Im telling you Foxy has a gosh awful smell and its her mouth! She goes for a dental soon because she has dental disease, and needs teeth pulled. Just a thought.

Usually, I find that the people/animals that I take care of; are usually the ones that I bond with the most.

My newborn baby, for instance, required a lot of care!

I understand not coming into this with the expectation that your yorkie would require quite so much care.

I found the same thing with my little Lucy, who was diagnosed with mild MVD, and spent a WHOLE LOT of time at the Vet's initially. But she was so little, and she needed me so much ~ how could I not take care of her?

We got her situation under control and I swear, she is the most loving dog I have ever had. Her love, devotion, and sweet disposition just shine in her bright eyes.

She has paid me back tenfold for everything I did for her. Yours will too if you open your heart and try to get your frustration under control. She does NOT want to cause you problems; she wants only to be loved.

I'm sure that this is something you can get under control and enjoy your beautiful yorkie; snuggles and all.

gidget529 04-14-2011 10:08 AM

That poor little furbaby!! It must feel terrible to be itching with inflamed skin and have to sit and smell yourself! Have you contacted the Rescue to see if they noticed a problem or if their vet noticed anything? I would take her to the dermatologist that was recommended here on this thread. I worked in human medicine for many years (now I'm dating my old self!), and sometimes one dr will be able to think of something that another one couldn't (especially if they are dealing with a rare presentation of a disease process). You may need to bathe her once a day with a medicated shampoo for a while...but what a small price to pay for the most loyal friend you will ever have on this earth. Illness touches all of our lives....hopefully when (I would say if, but it's been my experience we all eventually feel illness for ourselves) sickness befalls you (if it has not already) your caregivers will go to the same great lengths to help you in your time of need. Wishing you two the best!!! Please keep in touch and let us know how you make out. We will keep you two in our prayers.

That definitely sounds like an infection versus an allergy. The treatments will be different depending on whether it's fungal or bacterial. It will most likely require skin scrapings and cultures.

Something to think about. I know she stinks, but bathing TOO frequently breaks down the acid mantel of the skin and leaves it more vulnerable to infections.

I just saw the San Diego Clinic was posted in earlier. I hope you can find a solution for your Yorkie. When I first got Buster we had a number of medical issues to deal with between the fear for Buster's health/life and the expenses I was emotionally overwhelmed as well. But as another poster said I think I bonded with him even more being his nurse and caretaker. All of us switch between being companion and caretaker in our lives. You sweet stinky pup will be a great companion down the road. I know it must be hard to be close if you are repelled by the smell. Yorkies hearts are bigger than their bodies and you will find that your investment of time, money, and love will pay off. Best Wishes to you and your Yorkie.
