How else can I get Daisy to take her pill? I picked up a Capstar pill for her, and she needs it! She is itching like crazy. I tried putting it in some cheese, and she spit it out! its so tiny, so I know she can get it down at one time...but what else can I try? |
I was gonna say the cheese too. You could try putting it in some peanut butter and putting it in the roof of her mouth. |

Oh what's Capstar, I need something else besides benadryl for my little guy, he's driving me nutso with his itching, somedays it worst than others. I think it's definetly allergies. Did the vet give you that? |
I've tried putting it inside of a snausages treat. But again, Bella will eat anything! Try putting it inside her favorite treat. |

hide it in cream cheese if you have it, thats how i got lexi to take her pill this morning |
Just put the pill at the very back of her tongue. Hold her mouth shut and hold her head up at the same time until you know it's down. :) |

I wish I could, but she doesn't take treats! I guess being int he kennel they were never given the opportunity to have them, so she wont take them! I just tried the peanut butter, and she spit the pill back out!!!!!! HELP!! Capstar is for fleas, starts working in about 2-3 hours....I got it at the vet. |

Have you tried putting the pill in the back of her mouth, closing her mouth with your hands, then gently massage her neck so she swallows? That's the way we get Yoda to take meds... |

Now she wont even come near me :( I got to get this in her and get these fleas gone! |
Not sure if this will work but with Samson I just break up a treat (biscuit or something hard) into pieces and put the pill with it. He ends up eating everything out of my hand including the pill. If she won't eat out of your hand maybe just try putting it all on the floor in a little pile. |
It sounds like she is scared . Hold her for a minute and reassure her. Then open her mouth and drop it down her throat and hold her mouth closed while holding her head up (as if she is looking at the ceiling). Wait until she swallows it. You can't show her that you are frustrated, just be calm and gentle....she will swallow it. |

I use to put the pill in little tiny peices or even powder and put it in cottage cheese thta always wroked for Cosmo, becuase he could always find the pillin what ever I gave him but not this way |
You have to have her on her back Quote:
a half hr or so. With her on her back you open her mouth quickly and with her mouth held closed she almost has to swallow and tickle her neck alittle too if possible. If you are calm and matter a fact about it, it will help. Good Luck |
Since none of the usual seem to be working try crushing the pill up into some soft food, cottage cheese or similar. If this still doesn't work the last resort would be to get a pill popper (syringe) from the vets...I have to do this w/ my F cat. She has to take 1/2 4mg Diazapam pill and 1 phenobarbitol 2 times a day and crushing doesn't work...it's like she can smell the pills or something. |
We crush up the pill and sprinkle it on a white egg omelet while it's cooking. He doesn't know what hit him! :) |
[QUOTE=AmyZinNC]NOT having any luck..ive tried a few times and I can't get it far enough back...then she works it back out again!!!!!! [QUOTE] You're not getting it back in her mouth far enough if she's working it out. Put the pill between your thumb and forefinger on one hand and use your thumb and forefinger on the other hand to pry her jaw open by putting your thumb on one side of her mouth between her teeth and your forefinger on the other side of her mouth between her teeth. Once she opens, put the two fingers that have the pill between them inside the mouth far enough to drop the pill in her throat. Close her mouth immediately and start stroking her throat with your hand keeping her snout shut. This way she cannot try to cough or wiggle the pill back out and she'll have to swallow it within a few seconds. |
I have mashed up a pill between two spoons, put a little bit of water on the powder to make a paste and put it on the roof of her mouth. |
When all else fails... Scrunch it up and put it in some yogurt or cottage cheese!! I've used ice cream too. (Vanilla of course!!) Suz |
Crushing the pill like several have said is a great idea. It always works for me. I just crush it with a spoon in the bottom of a bowl till it is a fine powder and mix it with peanut butter real well and spread it on a tiny piece of bread and they gobble it down and never even know it. I'm a nurse and mix the crushed pill with pudding every day for my patients who cannot swallow well. So maybe it will work with your little girl who just won't swallow well..lol Good luck! |
