Advice Please! Hi Everyone.. I'm new to this forum and also a first time pet/yorkie owner. :DI got Billy about a week and half ago. He's a 6 month old and I have been having a very difficult time trying to potty train him. I am trying the crate method but it does not seem to work or I am doing something wrong. Billy still messes in the house multiple times a day.. it's like it's not sinking in or something.:( I take him out first thing in the morning and he goes #1/#2 sometimes he's squatting 2 or 3 times before I bring him back in. I let him play since he goes and the next thing I know 5 mins haven't even passed and he's going inside again. I take him out multiple times a day and no matter how much he goes outside he comes back in and goes in the house. If this continues I may have to give him up and I don't want to do that. Please help... I need some advice on what to do:confused: |
Give him LOTS and LOTS of praise when he goes outside. I have always trained mine to "do your business" on demand, this helps a bunch. As far as him constantly going in the house, try catching him in the "act" and running him outside to where you want him to potty. And if all else fails, maybe you could pad train him or get one of the fake grass potty things? Sorry I cant be more helpful. |
As you know or may not know Yorkies are kind of hard to potty train. Zach just turned a year yesterday and he still has accidents. Some people are lucky and their yorkies are good but some are not. You have to have patience. Have you had him checked out by a vet because he seems to be going alot. You have to put him outside let him do his business and then take him in. If you let him play he wont get the idea that it's his time to go. Do you have a wee wee pad? I wouldn't crate train him I would put him in an x pen with a wee wee pad. For some resason they don't like going in a crate especially if it's where he sleeps. I usually say Bad Boy and put him on the wee wee pad. One thing for sure, he shouldn't be allowed to free roam in the house until he's trained. |

Wait, so he's going pee inside after he just went outside? He's either marking or has a UTI. It's not normal to go outside and then come inside and do it again. Has he been neutered yet? Neutering should help a lot and he's at the perfect age. With Jackson, I would do what you are doing... take him out first thing in the morning and if for some reason he only went pee, or only went poop, he'd go back in the crate for 10 more minutes. Then I'd try again. He didn't get freedom until he did both (because as a pup, I knew he always had to do both in the morning). He potty trained pretty easily and had free roam by 5 1/2 months old but I was super consistent. When he was out of the crate, it was only after I knew he had went potty outside (and I praised and gave him treats every time) and in a small confined area, like the kitchen gated off, etc. |
It's Hard Work Potty training a Yorkie is VERY difficult in most cases. It takes praise, patience, and treats. We took Bella out every hour and said "go potty" for pee and "go poop". When she went we immediately as soon as she finished gave her a treat, right then and there and acted like fools with praise and excitement. We also watched her very carefully inbetween. She would start wandering and sniffing if she had to go and then we would whisk her outside. Limiting her area to roam to an ex pen is effective. Put it on tile, etc. where it won't matter if she has an accident. Also, be sure you are using an enzymatic cleaner that will remove all scent. Don't give up, you will feel such a feeling of accomplishment. Believe me, it took us forever, but the love and affection, and JOY we receive from Bella was worth every inconvenience. She is now 100% trained and has only had 1 accident (our fault, we didn't see her by the door) in the last 1 1/2 years. It can be done. Good luck! |
