Yorkie teeth - looking for advice?? Darwin is just about 2 and Mabel is just under 1. We feed only dry food and give dentabones every few days. Is it necessary to brush teeth? Do all Yorkies have problems with their teeth or is it only those that are fed soft food and lots of treats? They hate having their teeth brushed and I would love to hear from anyone with experience. I've had larger dogs and cats and none of them EVER had teeth problems. Any older yorkies that have great teeth when they get older that weren't brushed - or is it just wishful thinking? Thanks in advance!:) |
I brush mine once or twice a week...but I also work in a dental office and see nightmare teeth human teeth all the time!!:D |
Yorkies are prone to dental disease and it seems to me like the smaller the muzzle, the worse the teeth can be! My Tibbe was really wild when I first got him and fought me when I started to try to brush his teeth! But little by little we worked up to it and now he gets his teeth brushed almost every day and a full dental cleaning as the vet determines, every 12 - 18 mos. It keeps Tibbe's breath smelling nice and his gums healthy. Takes about 2 minutes out of my day and the payoff is huge. Tibbe had very, very bad breath when I first got him and had double rows of many teeth, 1 decayed tooth and bad, bad gums so I don't want my little baby to ever have to go through bad dental disease again. Just be patient and work a little at a time each day until it is accepted. If you want, I can PM you my technique but it is not hard at all. |
I think that brushing their teeth is a must! I'm slowly getting Belle used to it even though she's finally only eating dry food. I just don't want her to be a toothless old lady someday like my "older sister" Chelsea the yorkie was. (She lived to be 17 btw) |
Corky will NOT let me or the vet come near his teeth, When he got his neuter last week, She was able to take a look, and gave him a clean bill of "Mouth health". But she did recommended a cleaning to keep it that way. Ash also said, since he will not allow anyone to go near his mouth, To buy him something from Pet smart for his breath and teeth and To have him drink lots of water. |

Yorkies are known to get bad teeth. I wouldnt take the chance of doing nothing. I brush Callie's teeth weekly as well as treat them with oravet and Callie chews on bones daily. |
Another YT member posted this and i have saved this post since it was so awesome, sharing it with you: Dogs can't have regular toothpaste mainly because of the flouride. There are many dog toothpastes out there (C.E.T. is a good one) that are chicken or beef flavored. Any soft bristled brush will do but there are some really great ones for dogs with a longer and ergonomic handle that are easier to use. The vet I worked for was a big on teeth brushing and this is how we explained to the clients to get the dog used to it: First few days just put a tiny bit of the dog toothpaste on your finger and let them lick it off followed by praise and a treat. Next couple of days put the toothpaste on your finger and rub it on their teeth (like brushing with your finger) followed by a treat. Then when they've accepted and are used to that, go ahead and use the brush - you want to start at the gum line and go in a downward motion. Idealy you should brush the teeth once a day. :D |
I just recently purchased the C.E.T. Mini fingertip toothbrush and I can honestly say it is the best toothbrush I have used. The tip is so tiny that it reaches really well into their tiny mouths. I also use C.E.T toothpaste and Petzlife gel. I brush every night before bedtime. They used to hate it and now when they see me with the toothbrush they just come and sit down on my lap and let me brush away. Here is a link for the toothbrush  Amazon.com: C.E.T. I use Liquid Filled Tooth Swabs and Liquid Oral Care, by Petkin for Zhoie. Her mouth is so tiny, we have tried several different tooth brushes (which she accepts ok) but none of them fit in her mouth or the side of her jaws to get to those teeth. With swabs you snap the end of it and the liquid wets the swab and I can clean every tooth. The Liquid Oral Care is 1 cap full in her water. We are having good success with both products. |

I agree, brushing is a must. And although yorkies in general are prone to bad teeth. There are some yorkies with great teeth. And NO, dry dog food, doesnt do anything. My yorkie has dry ONLY, and dry treats, and greenies. NOTHING keeps the tarter away except brushing. I work at a vet clinic so i may be a little obsessed with his teeth. But he is 4 and has already had 2 dentals. ANd i brush his teeth every single day. Some have horrible teeth, and mine is obviously one of them. But its worth all the extra work to keep him from getting infected teeth, and to keep him from losing teeth. |
Is the C.E.T. and Petzlife gel something I can buy at Petsmart/Petco? or must I get these items from the vet. You guys are awesome with the info...I love this place, makes me feel like a confident Yorkie owner instead of a frazzled Yorkie freak. LOL |
