You Get What You Pay For
 

When my friend and I moved to our new home we started looking for an affordable vet because of all the animals we have. Well we found one and we started taking our animals there. I was crazy about our other vet but they were kind of expensive. I really missed them though. Well a couple of things changed our mind about affordable vet care. The first was that they don't believe in screening before spaying. I had to beg them for the screening and then they charged alot of money to do it. The second reason was they are too impersonal, it's like going to a clinic you never get the same vet twice. The second reason is that one of my basset hounds got a very bad reaction to the distemper vaccine and got really sick. When we took her back to the vet she told us to buy benadryl over the counter and give it to her. Not even a shot to help her. Thank God she snapped out of it. My friend's dog almost died because of the distemper shot. She ended up in emergency where the dog was put on an iv all night and given five more shots. It ended up costing her over $900 in the emergency hospital.
When my cat got an attack of asthma we took her over there and without even going into things she gave us Clavamox which had no effect at all, No shots or anything that's when we decided to go back to our old vet who knew her record. She gave her an injection and Azithromycin and in two days she was fine again. Sorry this is so long but I wanted to explain that sometimes you just cant economize when it comes to your pets.

I agree, somewhat -- but sometimes you don't get the service you pay for -- some of the high priced vets are Yorkie ignorant and irresponsible as well. If you are lucky, like I am, you CAN find a responsible, intelligent vet who knows Yorkies and who is willing to refer, research, and/or call other for a consultation with other vets if something "wierd" comes up that they aren't quite sure about. I love the vet practice I use and especially love the fact that my Dr. Amy has a special needs Yorkie and several other staff members have Yorkies and other small breeds. Plus, they are there for me 24/7/365. In cases of emergency they are only a call away. I can't believe that the new vet didn't contact the old one for records :confused: I thought that was just a routine part of changing vets.

I totally agree. I always use vets that are AAHA certified. I've just had too many run ins with idiot vets.

I really like our vet. He is certified, affordable and always goes that extra mile. He doesn't rush Sophie in and out but rather takes extra time for explanations and questions. He doesn't give combination shots. When she needed baby teeth pulled at the time of her spay he told us there were three teeth that needed to come out at $15.00 per tooth. After her surgery he only charged us for one saying the other two practically fell out in his hand. We would never have known the difference had he charged us for three. She had her annual check up a couple weeks ago and received her distemper booster as well. As usual, the vet's office called the day after her appointment to check on her well being after her shot. When we had to put our yorkie Baby down when she was sixteen he was so understanding of our grief and even sent us a dog sympathy card the following day. We are very fortunate to have an honest, affordable and humane veterinarian for Sophie.:animal-pa

So glad to hear you returned to your old vet!!! I cannot believe that other vet did not offer a little Prednisone to help with vaccine reaction ! - get your own Benadryl??? UGH!

This is the second time that happened where the vet never gave the dog a shot. When Zoe got sick she told me to go to the drug store and get Pepsid. Thank God it worked that time. The only time they seem to give shots is for vaccinations other than than you're on your own. Yes I'm really glad I went back to my old vet. I really miss them alot they are much further away than this vet but the trip will be worth it. When I see how far the people on this forum go to help their pets I had a real wake up call.

I absolutely love my vet so does Callie her little tail goes crazy when we walk in there even when shes not feeling good. I think its very important to like your vet and feel comfortable with them. When my mom got Sammy and took him in (I went with her) our vet sat on the floor and took the time to wait for him to come to her and check her out. I never feel stupid asking a question and thats so important.

I have two vets, my vet in Michigan is very high priced. They are excellent with my animals. My vet is Florida is excellent with Keno. He just neutered him and pulled three teeth. He did not charge for the teeth. He clipped his nails at no charge. His charge with blood work was 212.00 complete with meds. The same surgery with my Michigan vet would have been 263.00 + 25.00 per tooth and extra for meds. Both are good, not sure that there is any good reason for the difference in price.
