Do all reputable breeders charge top dollar? I am curious about reputable breeders, and how much more money it is to spend on a puppy from one? I understand that a reputable breeder will often have better health gaurentees on their pups, and their health contracts are good. They also don't sell one of their babies just to anybody. Is this where the higher costs coming from? When I first got Suzi I had know idea about reputable breeders and their practices. Now I am more familiar with it. I also think a repuatable breeder screens for genetic defects in their offspring, and are in it to better the breed. I am not one eho would want a very small yorkie, just a standard one, with all the basic colorings a yorkie will eventually have when older. So is this the difference of a reputable breeder? And it really does matter , even though the cost of one of these yorkie pups could run you into the thousands? Suzi is now what I believe was from a BYB . Fortunately she has stayed healthy. However, her colorings are a little off, and she is bigger then the average adult yorkie. But she displays all the yorkie traits, characteristics of a yorkie, and nobody has ever questioned her breed. |
Non-reputable breeders charge top dollar as well. |

At least reputable breeders can justify their prices. It's not cheap to go through all the health testing. Showing costs a pretty penny, too. |
I don't think cost alone can justify good breeding. Pet stores, for example, around here charge between $1500-$2000 for a Yorkie pup that is obviously coming from a puppy mill. And the sad thing is people pay it, because they don't know any better obviously. :( |
I wrote a thread on the different prices for different breeders. Price is just one indication; bad breeders tend to charge the most and least for their dogs. Maybe this thread will help you, and by the way, area of the country also affects price. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...kie-puppy.html |
No, some of the least costly Yorkies come from show breeders I have found...sent many pet buyers to club members, only to ehar they got a great male puppy for $500/600...retired female for cost of spaying/dental...the smaller, younger ones do cost a bit as a rule, but it allows the breeders to let others go for less...and even give some away... BUT to date I have never heard of $5,000/$10,000 puppies like some pet breeders sites...show potentials are different... |

Just wanted to say "THANK YOU!" for the informative post and the link to yet another informative post! Just a few hours of skimming through YT is enough to provide a general education (BYB, pet stores, quality food) but YT seems to be my new addiction and I can't wait to share the things we're learning. Especially helpful is the thoughtful, detailed explanations that include the who/what/when/where/how and especially the WHY aspects of good puppy purchases and care.Thank you, all! |

If your looking for a great breeder check out the YTCA.org website...it'll lead you to the 2 Regional Clubs in Texas. And as Yorkie Rose said you'll be pleasantly surprised at reputable breeder prices.....Also, keep in mind a contract is only as good as the two people signing it.. |
The buy price was terrific, the guarantee great, but if you have a stupid Brother in Law, keep him away from your pup! |

I think it applies to stupid people in general, not just family members. I cringe when people want to touch my dogs. |
