Training a new dog Hi my name is Rose and I am new here. I got a new fur baby her name is Annabelle. Not real sure if she is full yorkie or a yorkie poo. We got her at 10 weeks old and she weights 3.2 lbs We are working on getting her use to her new brother right now and it is going pretty good. Her brother is a 15 lb Jug 1yr old all muscle. He is very gental with her. This is my first time having such a small dog. I use to train guide dogs for their first year So my question is do I train her in the same manner ? Thanks for any advice Rose |
I trained, well technically training, Gizmo just how I trained my Cairn Terriers. However, please keep in mind that they are smaller, and have a tendency to be a bit more stubborn. It'll take alot of patience, alot more I noticed for him then my other terriers. I used alot of jumping around and praising (for going potty outside, sitting, general training, etc.) instead of treats simply because we used treats for other things like hair brushing and going in the crate. I think it's up to you, but remember that consistency seems to be key with this little dogs. Consistency and alot of patience. But, it'll pay off. We worked with Gizmo and were so consistent with him going potty outside, and now he rings the bell at 5 months. We don't trust him 100% by any means, but it's a working process. Good luck! |
I agree patience is the key with little ones, they have a very stubborn personality. Find a treat that the puppy likes and use it to train. I trained presto to go on a pee pee pad as we live in an apartment but he picked it up very quickly as they love to be praised. |
Radha loves to use the potty outside thankfully! She just took to it immediately. When I was training Rumi he would wait until he came inside to relieve himself. It was so frustrating. I have pee pads inside for while I am at work and she uses them 50% of the time. |
I posted a question a few weeks ago about training my Yorkie puppy because I was having a hard time with her. She wasn't responding the way my other dogs had (Beagle and Akita and a few others that I've helped relatives and friends with). Everyone just told me to be patient and find a treat that she LOVES, so that's what I did and she coming along ;) The others are definatly right, it's all about patients and doing it a million times lol. For example, where every other dog I've trained learned "sit" in like 5 minutes most (even my Akita and if you know anything about that breed, they can be VERY stubborn) it took like 2 days with Alice! So, I'm new with a Yorkie like you and it is different, but I've seen some videos of Yorkies doing amazing with obedience and agility, so I guess it may just take a little more work than what you're possibly used to. Housebreaking is a long process too:p, never ever thought I'd break down and use piddle pads, but I did and they are a life saver:) Good luck and welcome:D |
Tibbe was and is a very fast learner and learned all of his tricks very quickly after only a few repititions except the "Sit Up", which he has only recently mastered after 2 years of off and on training. He just could not keep his little body upright for very long or would topple over because he was overeager. Finally, though, Tibbe can sit up very well! Keep the training sessions extremely short and do them frequently during the day was my moto with Tibbe. Keep at it and once your baby gets that she is really accomplishing something, making you very happy and getting a "paycheck" treat, she will probably really engage. |
