Dominance or something else? Hercules is only 15 weeks old and he has started humping people. I'm pretty confident that this isn't sexual for him but I can't find anything in my books about why else he would be doing this. I'm also wondering what, if anything I can do to stop it. I gave him a "hump" toy, hoping that he would use it instead of my arm, but he doesn't. Was this the wrong move? I just don't want him to be the dog that humps everyones leg. :( |
It's a dominance thing. Mine did the same thing, and my vet told me that. Practicing "leadership" exercises with him will make him accept you as dominant and stop trying to be dominant himself. I learned what to do in obedience school, but it's hard for me to explain. You hold up the puppy in the air, and lay him on his side, make sure he waits for you to walk through doorways first. I'm not very good at explaining how to do it... |
I don't believe it to be a dominance thing.... I think it's just fun for them and it feels good *shrugs* Just re-direct him to doing something else. You definitely don't want a dog that humps peoples legs. Also, neutering should help this when he is the proper age. |
Moshe will do this as well and he is 14 weeks. What we have been doing is making a loud noise (can't quite convey it in text) to redirect his attention and to take the arm or leg immediately away (obviously). If he continues (and every once and awhile he does) I get up and turn my back on him (got that one from it's me or the Dog). It works 50 percent of the time. I'm just praying that when he gets neutered it gets better. |
Humping another dog is usually a dominance thing and guaranteed to piss the other dog off. Humping a human arm or leg . . I'm not sure. That said, my little maltese, Casper (RIP) had a stuffed bunny that he humped ALL THE TIME but he never humped another dog or anyones arm or leg. So, in his case, I don't know. Perhaps he had sexual feelings toward the bunny? I never had a problem with it since he limited all his humping activities to that one Bunny. It did, however, drive my mother crazy, so I let it continue indefinitely. :p It went on until the well meaning kennel that I boarded him at (of course I took his bunny) washed the bunny. After that, he never touched it again. And he never found another friend like that either. Poor Casper.:D |
My Neo started humping his blankie when he was just a baby! Very precocious! The vet said that it actually is beneficial to them as it helps to "seat" the testes so that there is less of a chance of them to be undecended (thus making it more of a difficult neuter). Yes, it is VERY annoying if they're humping inapropriately, and should be discouraged. I just got Neo a stuffed "Phucky" duck that became his object of affection. Even now, at almost 2 he will still take "private time", usually after a full belly in the PM. He really reminds me of a teenage boy in that regard, lol!:D |
Your pup is exhibiting alpha type behavior. Humping is a way of expressing dominance. He is trying to dominate you...My 7 mos old did it when I first got him...did it to me and He would try to hump Bella my female yorkie, well needless to say that didn't go over to well with her...it pi$$ed her off...so I knew I had to stop it...did a little research on it...found out it was dominance...the easiest way to correct it is to... when you see him humping someone just walk over and say NO, pick him up and cradle him in your arms belly up...don't let them down until they stop fighting it...once they stop resisting it and relax...I would love on him some and than put him down and give him a treat...he doesn't do it anymore...It's a great technique, lets him know he cannot dominate you..and that behavior is unacceptable. Now he does hump his toys lol...but I don't correct that...I see no harm in it. I let him have his fun..lol As long as its not me or Bella. He is going in on April 16th to be neutered...that should help as well. |
Our guy had an undescended testicle. Someone (probably from YT) told me that the humping could actually help descend it. Well, his testicle did descend, which made his neutering surgery much easier on him (and on our budget!) Anyway, he humps occasionally now, but much less. For some reason, he likes to grab onto our arms in the morning when we carry him. I figure he stil has some testosterone and the levels are higher in the morning. We just gently remove him. Good luck! |
It can be dominence thing - some adult neutered dogs will even do it, especially if they're introduced to a new dog and to people if the dog has a dominant personality. With a puppy that young though, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I definatly wouldn't let him do it to my arm or another dog (or cat, I've seen that too lol) but don't be too concerned if he does it to a toy or something, he'll most likely grown out of it (if you get him neutered that is;)) as long as your training involves teaching him that you're the "alpha". And as some others have said, if he has an undescended testicle, it could help drop it down to make the neutering easier. |
Most of the dogs at my house are male. When they started doing this,I "quietly" said their name, when they looked up I "quietly" said no and then redirected them for play (throwing the ball or just following me through the house). It worked for us. Each dog is a little different as to what works with them, just like people puppies. |

Humping should be discouraged no matter what the case. I wouldn't give him a special stuffed toy to "enjoy" either. Whenever they do it, tell them no, and redirect them to do something different. |
