New Yorkie! Denim Hi everyone. I'm new to the site and I am sooo excited to get my 1st dog ever at 24 (my age) and for it to be a yorkie! I am picking denim up next Saturday! I think I'm to excited!!! I have spent over $200 on stuff for Denim! Is there any advice you all can give me. I would appreciate it. I bought a crate for crate training and anything else u can possibly think of but I would love to hear ur thoughts. The only thing I'm having a problem with is what type of food to feed him. And I know it depends on the dog so I don't want to bother everyone with that question. Thanks for your help! :) |
Congratulations and welcome! :DI'm a new Yorkie owner too, but I will offer you two pieces of advice (I'm sure you'll get many many more:)) - Alice is my first Yorkie, but not my first dog by any means;) and she's really different than any other dog I've had so read read read as much as you possibly can on this site, you will learn a ton! As far as what food (you're gonna hear this alot on this site too) - I can't stress enough - go holistic! I worked as a vet tech for quiet a few years and have learned alot about canine and feline nutrition and even though the food will cost more, it's 100% worth it. I use Orijen for my Yorkie and Akita and Verus for my Beagle and cats. There are many other great brands that use human grade quality ingredients and no corn or other "fillers" and those are the 2 most important things to consider. Ask your local pet store for samples and see which one your little baby likes :) This site will be extremely valuable to you, especially since it's your first dog. Good luck, can't wait to see pics :D dogfoodanalysis.com is great for learning about food |
Oh, if you haven't already, get "wee wee pads" for housetraining, the scented ones. I never ever thought I would cave and use them, but with a teenie tiny dog, unless you plan on going outside like every single hour, you'll need them at least for a little while :) They're a lifesaver, well, carpet saver lol |
Welcome and congratulations. Since this is your first dog read as much as you can on here. It can be scary the first few days for you and the puppy so just try and relax and enjoy. Make sure you have nutrical on hand and read up on hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)just as a precaution. Knowing the signs and quick action should it occur can save their lives. You will love having a yorkie. I can't wait to see pictures. |
The best advice I've ever seen posted, is to remember that your puppy is still an infant. It needs lots of rest in a warm quiet place. It is not a toy do be drug around. You also need to make sure it is eating, and not getting over stressed. Getting used to a new home is very stressful in itself, without adding a lot of new people and new situations. Stress can cause the puppy's immune system to weaken, causing him to come down with a number of different illnesses. |
:welcome4: Goddess! |
Hi everyone!!! Wow you are all soo helpful!!!! I appreciate all the advice!! I did puchase training pads...Amazon has been my best friend for these past few weeks!! I have been buying things at least twice a week. I'm ready to bring him home and share all pictures with you! Thanks so much for the help and advice! |
Hi Maxman!! Thanx for welcoming me to the site! |
Ahhh congratulations on your first Yorkie! I first got Mango last summer, July 2nd to be exact, if I remember the date correctly! The first few days were tough, Mango was really nervous the first night, and next day. He wouldn't eat/drink or go to the bathroom, but then he warmed up. Soon, he was completely attached to me, followed me around the house EVERYWHERE. I stood up to go to the kitchen for water, he followed, I go to my room to find something, he followed. Yorkies get very attached to owners, and that is what i love! Yorkies have SO much personality. I have two other dogs (pug and a husky) but out of all three, Mango has the most personality by far. Hes my bud! :) Good luck with your new little one!! You will love him I'm sure! I bet you're so excited! |

I understand that you are excited to get him. However, it would be best for him if the breeder would let him stay with his mom and siblings until the 30th of this month. It is better all around if they get that full 12 weeks together. Congrats on your new puppy and finding this wonderful and extremely helpful site. Open your mind and you will learn tons of useful information on here. PS we love to see pictures on here too |

Welcome to YT :) I would recommend a good grooming regimen daily. Its never too late to start. When i picked up presto i had a pen, crate, food bowls, puppy food, harness, leash, pee pee pads for him. I also got him hair brushes, a good shampoo, conditioner, coat oil, tooth brush, paste, etc. Treats are helpful too if you want to potty train. My list will go on and on!!! lol |
